ladies who had drains!
So, I am flying over to Oahu for my BA, since here they don't have any PS's. And, I am planning on flying back home the day after surgery. I'll be getting my surgery done at 9am Tuesday morning, then we fly back at 5pm wednesday evening. But, my PS said I could only go back home if I am not draining anymore....
So, my first question, what exactly is a drain? And my second question is, for those of you who have had them, how long were they in for? Or how long were they draining for? Should I just plan on being there for another night??

Re: ladies who had drains!
a drain is a tube placed in the breast cavity to drain excess fluid and blood into a bulb at the end of it. i honestly thought it was gonna be grosser than it was, but they weren't bad at all
my doc said 1-2 days, he would have taken mine out after 1 day, but since he realized i was staying another day in town he decided to let them drain more.
i highly suggest you stay 2 nights, you need to rest and shouldn't be moving about so much

Thanks! I know...I'm thinking I should just plan on being there for three nights total...I'll talk to my husband about it!
And, it does sound super gross! Does everyone get them after BA?? Never heard of them before!

Re: ladies who had drains!
I agree hun, you should stay for another night.
Most girls who have drains only have them for a night or so. They are just thin tubes in the incisions which help to drain away excess blood and fluid to help reduce swelling.
Here's a pic that I found by googling

Hey hun I had drains and although they sound gross they are no big deal at all! Infact I am glad I had them because they got all the yucky drainage out of my body and I had virtually no swelling and I had no brusing! I could not feel them, even when they took them out.
I too suggest staying an extra night... I was only going to wear my drains for one night but I was still draining a fair bit so I had them in for two nights.

Re: ladies who had drains!
Macmama3, I had drains exactly like the picture shown. I had my BA on a Friday morning, and had my first appt on Monday morning when he took them out.
I also can concur that I have had NO bruising, and very little swelling. I couldn't feel the drains at all...I do have to admit when PS pulled my right one out, I almost leaped off the chair!!! It was kinda "stuck" and he had to gently jerk on it to make it "give" it was only for a second that it hurt.
It is also helpful I think to watch for infection, they tell you what colors/consistancy is ok. Additionally it helped me be more active in those first few days, getting up to literally watch the fluid drain down the tubes when I was upright, and to go to the bathroom sink where I would do my draining and measuring and enter it in my "drain log"

I had drains in each boob and they removed them the day after my Ba. I had no arising and a tiny bit of swelling! When they took them out it wasn't that bad, just gotta stay relaxed and breathe! It's more uncomfortable than painful. But when their in you can't feel them, except having to pick the both up evertime you go to the toilet! x

I wore pants with pockets and just kept the bulbs in the pockets, that way no one could see them either.
