Drains?
Hi Everyone, I keep reading about some people having drains put in after their op? What is this? Why do you have it and how come some people don't have it?
Is this something I could be having and what does it entail?
Forgive my ignorance on this!

Re: Drains?
I didn't have drains. Some surgeons like to use them, others don't, and some people need them, some don't. They are literally drains that are placed in your breast after surgery to drain excess blood/fluid.

Re: Drains?
I think most people don't have them, but if you do, they are normally taken out by the next day. xx

Re: Drains?
My surgeon said he will be using them and that they will be taken out day after op, before I go home.
He also said he would put on a waterproof dressing and said I could shower from day one - which sounds great.

Re: Drains?
Using drains is purely down to a surgeons preference, nothing more.
James McDiarmid prefers not to use drains other than for secondary surgeries (re-ops) so if you're having your surgery with him hunni, you wont be having drains. xx

Re: Drains?
My surgeon told me 'if there is a LOT of bleeding during surgery, then I will use drains' He saw my dislike towards the idea and smiled saying 'but don't worry I won't have to'... And I never had them. xx
Re: Drains?
All down to surgeon preference babe and how the op goes babe, everyone is different. Some people bleed more than others during surgery, some people are given fluids during surgery, others arent. It all depends. The drain is basically popped in there to stop the blood/fluid building up in the tissues, causing a haematoma or similar. Hope this helps x

Re: Drains?
I had drains...although they look a bit gruesome, collecting all the fluid and blood, they really arent anything to worry about. I must admit i was a bit concerned about having then taken out but it really wasnt a big deal...two nurses on either side of me each took one out at same time...a slight tug and out they came with no pain. I just have tiny scar like a dot about an inch away from my incision scar...x

Re: Drains?
As everyone says it is a sureons preferance.
My ps uses them with lifts and with implants larger than 500cc... and I was both so I had drains and I had them in for 2 days! I went home with them even and went back to have them out...
And honesty they sound horrible and gross but they are not that bad at all, I didnt even notice them and I didnt feel them coming out.
I can now also say I am so glad I had them because I had no brusing and very minimal swelling, I really think they helped me have an easy recovery.
Dont stress most girls dont seem to have them and if you do they are no problem. x
