Drains???
I have just got back from visiting my nurse for some mrsa checks and I asked whether or not I will be having drains fitted after my surgery. She said that as it was day case the surgeons dont use them, this is fine as I wasnt looking forward to having them removed anyway but will this make a massive difference to the amount of swelling etc?? I mean...what is the use of them and should I be worried that im not having them?
Is there anyone who didnt have them???xxxxx

Re: Drains???
I didn't have them lovely, and I didn't notice any massive swelling. I think some PS use them to be extra careful and reduce swelling, but from what I've seen and read they don't seem to affect swelling that much.

Re: Drains???
I didn't have drains either hun but was overnight, my ps just doesnt use them. I had some swelling (not a huge amount) for the first few weeks but drank plenty of water to flush it all out, it went down nicely. I wouldnt be worried about not having them as alot of surgeons dont use them x
Re: Drains???
Oh thank you sooo much, i came home earlier extremely worried!! Im gettin so excited now, it cant come quick enough. I think i`ll try to do what you did nads and try to drink as much water as I can, xxxxxxxxxx

Re: Drains???
I did'nt have drains either, I was an overnight stay in hospital. My P.S. dosent use them either. I have nothing to compare too, but do not think I had any great swelling. However, at my check 7 weeks , he said that it can take up to 3months for the final swelling to be gone for some, just depends when your own body adjusts and they settle in. Hope this helps x

Re: Drains???
My surgeon tends to not use drains and I had some swliing but nothing monstruous hun! It has pretty much all gone now at 3 weeks - or at least I think it has, the more persistent bit of swelling was in between the boobs but that seems to have been absorbed too. So I wouldn't worry xxx

Re: Drains???
I'm going to request drains as I would rather go through the few seconds of discomfort taking them out than have problems inside and not know about it.
Personally, and I know I'm new, but after speaking to shooting star drains is a no brainer.

Re: Drains???
Theres pros and cons of drains, i know girls who have had haematomas with drains, drains also increase the risk of infection, you have to weigh it up but have what you feel comfortable with. If my surgeon did use drains i would've had them, i have nothing against them and wouldn't of minded the pain, alot of surgeons these days just dont use them xJemmy wrote:Personally, and I know I'm new, but after speaking to shooting star drains is a no brainer.
Re: Drains???
Strange how some surgeons use them and some don't. I guess that if you do have them you just need to be careful what you touch and then touch the drains.

Re: Drains???
Yes exactly, let us know at your consult what the ps says about them Jem and if he uses them x
Re: Drains???
I think some of you know my opinion on this one but i would never have another BA without the re-assurance of drains but i guess this is because i believe my internal bleed (haematoma) would have been noticed alot sooner if i'd had them.
Nads is right you can have complications with or without them but drains do pick up internal bleeds if they happen within the post op period that you have them fitted as well as do their job of clearing out the remaining fluids post op, it's best to discuss this one with the surgeon as some surgeons use different flushing techniques so to minimise the fluid build up and therefore don't use drains xx

Re: Drains???
I had them and they didn't hurt when they came out, was just a weird weird feeling. My surgeon doesn't usually use drains but he did on me, I was a day case aswell. They were fitted after surgery (bout 3pm) and removed about 7:30/8 before I went home xx

Re: Drains???
Well that clears a few things up for me, my ps told me I would be having them at my consultation last week and I've panicked ever since!! but now I've read everyone's comments it seems as though there's nothing to worry about. Do they leave marks/scars???

Re: Drains???
I had drains and I was lugging around two plastic vats on either side of me that had to be placed on the floor. I could see the blood travelling down the tubes from my boobs and filling them slowly. PS used them to reduce the risk of a haematoma.
They got removed after 48 hours, wasnt any pain on removal and I didnt find them uncomfortable when I had them, it was just awkward moving around with them. I have two tiny marks that aren't even noticeable from where the drains were inserted, so nothing to worry about really, its not as bad as it sounds xx
