A blood test to detect ruptures?
Silicon breast implant patients have to undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) every two years to detect leakage or rupture as per FDA guidelines. However, MRI technique is not foolproof and, at times, leaky implants might be missed. Now, Canadian researchers are trying to develop a cheap and easy blood test to detect leaky implants. Researchers from The University of British Columbia have designed a fast method to detect leakage events.
Test Highlights
a. This is a non-invasive test.
b. In this test, a stable synthetic tracer molecule added to silicone breast implant filler is detected in a patient's hair, blood or urine, if there is any leakage or rupture.
c. It is highly effective and accessible.
d. It is cost effective.
e. It reduces the associated health risks of silicon implants.

Has anybody else heard anything about this? I've just been looking for more information on the net and can't find anything.
This is something I'd be very interested in if were available to us, it would be safer, given that we wouldn't have to expose ourselves to radiation every couple of years with a CT/MRI scan and also so much cheaper! A quick simple blood test to gain the reassurance we all need to know that all is well! - Amazing!

hmmm sounds fantastic!!
I wonder if it's available here :dunno: perhaps ask James if he knows anything about it

heehee... Yup, already asked hun, any info on this would be fantastic!
Re: A blood test to detect ruptures?
I think this would be amazing if they could do it. I know with anything like this it wouldn't be 100% but if it could get some without the need for MRI's it would save people so much money.

I didn't even know you have to have a MRI scan every two years?? My surgeon never mentioned this? xx

It's not something surgeons provide Kerry, you'd have to pay for the MRI scan yourself babe. xxx
Re: A blood test to detect ruptures?
How much do they cost and how do you go about getting one? Does it have to be every 2 years cookie? xx

I don't think I'd be in a hurry Kerry, scans are expensive....If you had good reason for concern such as for those ladies with PIPs then I'd be inclined to have regular scans, or if you suspected a rupture at any time I'd be sure to have one! But other than that, I wouldn't worry too much hun.
I found this babe [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] costing almost £200 for a scan which I didn't think was too bad for that peace of mind if you needed it. xx
