Re: How to avoid infection?
i bought some savlon anti septic spray and sprayed my wounds (through the steri strips) everyday. I continued this after the strips came off after a shower then dried the wounds with a hair dryer so they weren't left damp. I was given this advice by my surgeon - they may tell you not to put anything on your wounds at all.
I also used alcohol gel on my hands before i touched my wounds if i needed to. A little OCD with the old germ killing equipment but you can never be too safe!
They also usually advise to not soak in the bath or swim for 6 weeks or until your wounds are completely healed so there is no chance of dirty water getting in.

Re: How to avoid infection?
I did EVERYTHING that I was advised to do to the very letter hun and still I got an infection.
Sometimes these things are way beyond our control sadly, but 'if' you are unlucky and have to deal with an infection, then your clinic should do their best to help to treat it for you. I'd just follow the guidance you're given and just enjoy your new boobs sweetness, you should be fine.
If it helps to know, my infection cleared up after a course of anti-biotics just fine. xxxx

Re: How to avoid infection?
wow are you 3 weeks already mizzpink - thats gone quick! Correct me if i'm wrong anyone but I think the point when it is really unlikely is 6wks ish when the wounds are completely healed, however i think your chances of infection reduce more and more each day as your skin heals itself. Having said that if the wound re-opens (which I have heard of happening) obviously the chances are higher.
As cookie mentioned, infection can also develop from bacteria already inside your body, not necessarily anything to do with how you treat your wounds, so some people are just unfortunate.
Would be interested to find out when your infection developed cookie - i didnt know you had one!

Yeah, 3 weeks post-op hun, you can read about it from page 4 I think in my blog. anti-bs right before christmas I had! :mornincoffee:
No idea what caused the infection though, I'm just REALLY unlucky! I do think though having an auto-immune disorder didn't help, but that's just my theory. xxx

Re: How to avoid infection?
Infection can be caused by something as simple as your sweat. I don't think getting all OCD on your wounds can help, it actually may cause problems.
You won't be able to shower for at least 7-10 days post op, and most surgeons will advise putting nothing on your wounds until you've had your 2 week checkup. Just follow your surgeons reccomendations and try not to touch your scars at all. Personally I wouldn't advise putting anything at all on them just in case.
Unfortunately infection is a risk and a complication so make sure you're fully able to deal with it should it arise, and ensure you're 100% happy with aftercare too.

Thats OK heather, it thankfully all cleared up for me with no need for anything other than another course of anti-bs and careful monitoring from the clinic nurse.
I took a weeks course of anti-bs immediately after my surgery. some surgeons prefer to give anti-biotics whilst undergoing surgery though through the canula and don't use them in tablet form after so don't panic if you're one of the girls that doesn't get them hunni, they'll probably explain that they're already in your system from surgery.

Re: How to avoid infection?
I don't mind at all hun.
There was no reason - sometimes these things occur and no-one knows why as it did to me, it's a chance we ALL take when undergoing breast augmentation but ruptures are extremely rare and unless you had good reason to think you might have a rupture which like I said is rare then I wouldn't worry about it hun.
Nads made a great comment which I believe is important for everyone undergoing breast augmentation to know - "There aren't any guarantees with surgery" This is so true! and is the reason I stress to everyone to ensure you have a good after-care policy to cover you post-op.
You're gonna be OK Heather
