Driving after surgery??
Hi girls. Just a quick one really. Something I'm curious about. When were you all driving once the surgery was done? Xx

Re: Driving after surgery??
you'll need to check your insurance firstly as some impose restrictions on driving after surgery. My car was written off just before my op so I was car less but I don't think i'd have felt able to drive again until around 2 weeks post op. But, everybody is different & i did suffer quite badly with loss of upper body strength, i've read of girls on here driving 3/4 days post op.

Re: Driving after surgery??
I was advised as soon as I felt ready but not sooner than 48 hours as you will be classes as driving under the influence of drugs. I'm day 13 today and still struggle putting my car in 5th gear. I couldn't drive until day 11. I am still struggling to opening the calpol bottle and chopping veg. My left are is the weakest. All worth it tho :-) xx

Re: Driving after surgery??
After my first surgery I was fine after a week.
Like Nicole suggested, check your insurance lovely and then from a week onwards just play it by ear. Its also illegal to drive a car if you don't feel capable of doing an emergency stop, so do bare that in mind as well. Some girls feel great after a week, others need another week to get themselves back to normality, but your own body will tell you when you feel OK. Xx

Re: Driving after surgery??
I left it 3weeks, but that was my personal choice. Even then it was tricky, 2nd gear is painful, and turning to reverse is a strain. I can really feel it, and have been sore all week. I'm hoping it'll loosen up a bit next week though. Ask your surgeon for their recommendation, but ultimately listen to your body.

Re: Driving after surgery??
Thankyou ladies you've been great help as usual. I'll check my insurance for starters then ask my nurse at consultation on Sat and like you all say see how I feel and listen to my body. I've got 2 - 4 weeks off work (whatever I need) so I'm in no rush to jump behind the stealing wheel - luckily xx

Re: Driving after surgery??
Those of you who have driven after surgery, was it mainly the changing of gears that was the difficult part? I drive an automatic and wondered if that would be easier?

Re: Driving after surgery??
Gear change, handbrake and crossing over the wheel at first - had to go back to the good old learner driving instructions of feeding the wheel round corners! Anything that used one arms strength, or over stretching (like i said above with reversing). I was pondering whether to pinch the mom-in-laws automatic, but in a way Im glad I didn't, as its helped with my range of movement. I just wish the seatbelt didnt rub on my nips so much!

Re: Driving after surgery??
Thanks Charlii! I am quite a new driver so still feed the wheel haha! I am hoping that 2 weeks is realistic after a lift and re-aug?
Better watch out for those nips though!! Might get one of those seatbelt covers!

Re: Driving after surgery??
Regarding the seatbelt rubbing on nips. Once I've done my seatbelt up, I pull it slightly to loosen, and then put a clothes peg on it. I've found this really helps xx

It's going to be MUCH easierpr1ncessmummy wrote:Those of you who have driven after surgery, was it mainly the changing of gears that was the difficult part? I drive an automatic and wondered if that would be easier?

Reverse gear and 5th were probably the most difficult. So with having no gear changes you'll find driving so much easier to do. X
Re: Driving after surgery??
I took my car out yesterday at 8days post op and it felt fine. I didn't parallel park though as didn't wanna throw my arms around too much! but I think it'll be down to how you're feeling and what your body tells you xx

Good tip jsweetie!! Thanks for that!
Thanks Cookie! That is really good to know! 2 weeks should definitely be an achievable goal.

Re: Driving after surgery??
I drove today 16 days post op. I only passed a few months back and was nervous i might have forgotten how to do it, thankfully i hadn't!
Luckily i only made a short trip with speed limits of 50mph because i couldn't get into 5th gear. Everything else was absolutly fine even reverse as i could do it two handed, but im concerned for work on Monday now as i have to travel down 70mph dual carriage way and i'm not too sure other drivers will like me much plodding along at 50 during rush hour... ? Any suggestions?

Aww chicken, if they don't like it they will just have to lump it! your be in the left lane and they can overtake you so don't worry about any grumpy drivers! your boobie comfort is far more important :)
When im driving and someone is in the slow lane it doesn't annoy me because you can overtake! Middle lane hoggers however!! haha
Your be fine, go at your own pace :) xx

Re: Driving after surgery??
Thanks Jen - i think i'm nervous because my instructor made me drive at the speed limits which i am grateful for as it gave me confidence but i hate to think that i'm annoying someone behind me. Fingers crossed i will get stuck happily behind a lorry convoy lol
I will try again tomorrow and Sunday in the hope i may have loosened up a little xx

Don't worry about anyone else, if they don't like it they can overtake. I don't like driving fast so people are always overtaking me, some have the cheek to beep and give me a dirty look, so I just give them the finger lol x
