Help! Contraceptive?? Empty Help! Contraceptive??

Post by ElizabethSok 6th October 2012, 6:49 pm

Just got my 'pack' from the hospital yesterday, and sat down to read it through today... says in big red letters that the pill has to be stopped two weeks before surgery! but my surgery is in 9 days! Not sure what to do, and dont think I can call PS over the weekend.. does anyone know anything more about this? I use Cilest if that helps! Google tells me it depends on the type and on your PS.. what could be the problems if I keep taking it??

I think it's because of the risk of DVT Elizabeth. I'd keep taking your pill for now hun and give your clinic a call on Monday to see what they say. I'm sure I've read too that not all contraceptive pills can put you at risk. Xx

Deep Vein Thrombosis - Its a blood clot that usually forms in the leg during periods of immobility and if it travels to your heart or lung it can kill you. The pill thickens your blood slightly so it predisposes you to a DVT so you put that along side being immobile after surgery and the risks go up! Just check it out, my surgeon said to me that its recommeded prior to all surgery but she said you are only immobile for a short period of time so it doesnt really make that much difference! I had the implant anyway so it didnt effect me. Remember if u do stop the pill suddenly any sex u had in the previous 7 days could cause you to become pregnant. Until you speak to your clinic I would use a condom too if u are going to have sex and then if u need to stop the pill you wont be worrying about falling pregnant!

my doctor said that i should be walking around the next day at the latest... surely its a minor risk?! I cant just stop taking the pill now cause ye, i wont be protected til end of month.. and religiously i dont use condoms... soooo... not gonna happen!

I will call clinic and see what they say, but truthfully from research it doesnt seem to be the biggest worry to me, as long as they will still go ahead with surgery!

Im pretty sure he didnt say anything about it at all.. unless he just assumed id mention it when he asked about medications generally.

drama! Thanks for all the advice folks.

I know adult time won't be on the cards straight after, but if youve been given anti b's for after remember they can affect the pill x

I haven't had my BA yet but when I had surgery in May they didn't say anything to me about contraception & my op was on my lower back so I was pretty much immobile for two weeks ... Don't think it's that much of a risk but i'd def call your clinic.
