Contraceptive pill and BA
Hey ladies,
Not sure if I have posted in the right place, but was just wondering do you have to stop taking the pill a few weeks before surgery? I mean my surgeon asked me if i was on any medication and I think I said no, should I have mentioned that I am on the pill, celest, it just didn't occur to me at the time, probably too busy eyeing up the implants on his desk lol
Was anyone on the pill and had to stop taking it? I will ask at my next consultation but just thought I'd ask you girls too....
Ta very much! x x

Re: Contraceptive pill and BA
thats a good question hun, i have the "implanon" in my arm, and at my consult i mentioned this but wasnt told i needed it removed, so maybe its ok to keep taking the tablets, but i guess some surgeons may differ ?? itl be interesting to see what the other girls say xx

Re: Contraceptive pill and BA
I just read in the MYA paperwork that they gave me yesterday that you should come off the pill 2 weeks before? Who knows I'm sure we will find out soon. x x

I think it's because the pill can thin your blood or lower your blood pressure. I came off mine about a month before, but not really because of my BA, for other health reasons. xx

Thanks Jessica, that does make sense. I am seeing a surgeon for a second consultation next week, so will be sure to ask him then.
Must say Mr Adamo has done a great job on your boobies hun.

Hi,it all depends on your surgeon, they all have different preferences.I carried on taking mine.It has something to do with the thickness of your blood and clotting times of it,which the pill alters this. Best to check with your own surgeon hun x

I'm not terribly sure, but I do remember that when I came off G.A. while getting my wisdom teeth pulled I was crying hysterically for no reason and the doctor said that women on birth control tend to cry after waking up from general. He knew I was on it and didn't say anything about needing to come off of it prior to the procedure.

Re: Contraceptive pill and BA
I wasn't told to come off my pill, but some people are, think it depends on the surgeon and or clinic and how much risk it would put you at.
Re: Contraceptive pill and BA
I an Pre BA, but I had an op last year and my NHS consultant told me to come off as soon as I had been referred for the op, he said the sooner the better. Im going to ask at my consultation too so will let you know what he says xx

Thanks girlies for the comments, I will be asking the Q at my next consultation, just can't believe I said I was on no medication when he asked me, you tend to forget the pill is included in this. x x

Hi, I saw my surgeon last week and he told me that I wouldnt need to come off the pill, he said they put the stockings on you and then give you some injection after- cant remember the name of this drug though, but its only given if your on the pill I think.

Re: Contraceptive pill and BA
I've been told I can stay on the pill, but I wasn't told about the injection, I really don't want another injection as i'm petrified of needles!
Has anyone who was told to stay on the pill, then had to have some injection? my ps didn't mention it.
Any comments girlies...bit worried now! x x

That's interesting that you say that Fawn as both times I have had general anesthetic, I wake up bawling like a baby for no particular reason. It is very embarrassing!
I didn't need to stop my pill when I had my BA. I ws told that it can make your risk of developing Deep Vein Thrombosis slightly higher, but that as you are given surgical stockings and encouraged to move around as soon as possible, it is a tiny risk.
Plus, the aggro of coming off of the pill and the risk of getting pregnant worried me more!
Speak with your surgeon/patient coordinator. It is ultimately your decision at the end of the day hun

Re: Contraceptive pill and BA
Thanks hun, just spoke to OH and he said being on the pill does slightly increase chances of DVT, but as it's a relatively short op, and of course the stockings we're given to wear, then it is in fact classed as a very small risk.
I've been on the pill for such a long time and like you say Marie I too would be more scared about the risk of getting pregnant! So i'd prefer to continue on it.
Were you given an injection in that case? x x

Awwww you haven't hun, i'm just a big wimp when it comes to needles and injections! At the end of the day, if it's what I have to have there is no getting away from it, whatever I have it's to keep me safe x x
