Did you all have Antibiotics post op?
Hi ladies just wanted to know if all of you post op ladies were given anti b's by your surgeon?
I wasn't and the doc that saw me just before I was discharged double checked as I wasn't down to be given any, but the more stories I read now the more of you seem to have been given them and it's leaving me feeling a little concerned that I wasn't.
Going to ring the hospital in the morning just to make sure.x

Re: Did you all have Antibiotics post op?
Hi Wishful, I had to ask my nurses the exact same thing. They didn't have a clue whether I had been given any antibiotics and my surgeon had gone home. In the end they gave me some in an injection through my cannula. I suspect that the surgeon will have automatically given you (and me) some antibiotics post-op before we came round (and I got a double dose). But it's really bad that they didn't make it clear to you or me. You should call them first think in the morning and ask them to confirm you were given them. Don't be fobbed off!! Good luck sweetie and don't panic! xxx

Yeah to be honest I am a little worried and every little twinge I feel now is making me paranoid. Will contact the clinic to ask to speak to my PS as well to be honest as I lost faith in the nurses at the point of discharge. Argh why didnt I question this before now!? :-( xx

Re: Did you all have Antibiotics post op?
Right I've emailed the clinic also explaining that even if the hospital staff confirm I've had them I want to hear from my PS himself as the nurse when I was discharged didn't know her ear from her ****hole. Argggggh I'm a dizzy mare not following this up!!!!!

Good on you girl. Don't panic about the twinges, you will be twingy so that's nothing to worry about. (i've had chronic boob ache and twinge pain today a week post BA) If by some slim chance they haven't given you the drugs, they can give you a shot tomorrow and it will kill anything dead. Everything is so sterile these days the risk of infection will be really slim. But it is better to be safe than sorry. Good luck tomorrow xxxx

Re: Did you all have Antibiotics post op?
Oh Lordy I hope so I can see me having to go down there tomorrow you know. Haven't posted about this on here so far but the nurse gave me the documents and meds for another patient at discharge (major data protection breach!- the meds were the same as what I was prescribed) and the ward sister had to come to my house to exchange them with me. (the nurse had expected me to be driven back to the hospital to swap them- I asked her why I should as it wasn't MY error, cheeky cow) so the more I think on that the more likely it seems that I might not have anti-b's in my system.
Going to try to chill out and get my head down, will update tomorrow!

I was sent home with a 7 day course of oral abx, however some surgeons just like to give an IV push dose through your cannula while you're still under. I think it all depends really. Personally i think a combo of both is better.x

Re: Did you all have Antibiotics post op?
Spoken to the clinic and my email has been forwarded to my PS so I'm expecting to hear back a confirmation.
They said that normally it is given in theatre and that they don't send patients home with anti-b's, do that's put my mind at rest a little til I hear back for sure.
Thanks fOr getting back to me with the info guys xxx

Re: Did you all have Antibiotics post op?
Glad you're feeling better Wishful. Not everyone does come home with a course of anti-biotics, like with a lot of the pre-op/post-op recovery, different surgeons have different ways of getting the results they want for 'their patient' and some surgeons prefer to give anti-b's through an IV, so don't be guided by other womens post-op recovery hun, just focus on yours and what your surgeon has planned for 'you'. xx
Re: Did you all have Antibiotics post op?
I wasnt sent home with any antibiotics or painrelief.

Re: Did you all have Antibiotics post op?
I wasn't given any antibiotics. My surgeon preferred not to give them unless he thought it necessary.

Re: Did you all have Antibiotics post op?
Just looked and apparently I get 2 days of oral antibiotics which is as a precaution but I dont get longer than that as my surgeon doesnt want to give unneccesary antibiotics as it can cause antibiotic resistance.

Re: Did you all have Antibiotics post op?
I had IV antibiotics through my cannula every 8 hours until I left the hospital! Guess its just different for different hospitals/surgeons xx
