Fear of surgery
Good morning ladies,
My surgery is now less than 5 weeks away. I keep finding myself panicing about the surgery. In my head, this is what is going to happen...
My stomach will be churning over all night before and all morning. I'll be shaking with nerves and my palms will be sweating as soon as I see a nurse!
I will be walking to theatre and my heart will be pumping out of my chest.
I will enter theatre, see all the equiptment and the surgeon standing there waiting to cut me open and I will faint/throw up.
That is what I'm thinking about, constantly.
Ideally, they will knock me out before I get to theatre so I don't have to see anything, but I don't know if this is possible/safe.
Did anyone else have this fear/panic the day of their surgery?
Thanks, Tan xx

Re: Fear of surgery
you will be fine, I have never had a ga before and was really worried that I was going to die on the table and leave my kids and hubby for a procedure I didn't need!! I am still here!!
Maybe ask the anaesthetist for a pre-med and that will certainly take the edge off your nerves.
Also, you will go into an anaesthetic room to be put under and then wheeled into the op room once you are all set up to go. You will see very little equipment and certainly no surgical instruments!!
You will be fine. Just try and think of something elso evey time this feeling crops up.

Re: Fear of surgery
Try reversing your thoughts and thinking
"I WILL be absolutely fine"
"I WILL be in safe hands"
"I WILL wake up with gorgeous new boobies"
Its only natural to have these worries hun but in reality complications with the GA are really quite rare xxxx

Re: Fear of surgery
Thanks girls.
I think I would be a lot better if I get 'wheeled' into theatre from the anesthetic room. So I don't see any tools!
And I will ask for something for my nerves. Thank you!
I'm just going to tell them to send me to sleep as quickly as possible.

Re: Fear of surgery
Your feelings are completely normal. I was terrified the weeks coming up to my op. I even wrote a will, and sat my husband done and told him want I wanted for our children if I died.
The morning of my op, The fear disappeared and I skipped down to theatre and it felt like christmas.
Honestly it was a fantastic experience. And just think, people pay good money for drugs like that!
I promise you, you will wake up and be amazed how easy it was.
You are taken into a side room for the anaesthetic, then they take you into theatre once your asleep.
I'd do it again any day. X x x x

Re: Fear of surgery
It's all normal hun.
Most of us all felt the very same way you do now, I balled my eyes out all the way to theatre! Soooooooooooo embarrassing! HAHA!
The nurses and anaethetists are all so used to dealing with these emotions though and are VERY good at putting you at ease sweetness, you won't be the first to be worried and you most certainly won't be the last...

Re: Fear of surgery
Hey tanya jade, like the other girls have said you'll be absolutely fine! When I had my op last week, I walked down to theatre. There was a small room before the theatre and door was shut so I didn't see anything. The only thing I did see was the stuff lined up to put me to sleep.
I climbed up onto the bed which they had very kindly heated up for me and they put a blanket on me - I felt like I was getting tucked up for bed! :) I did have to wait a few minutes as I remember staring at the clock and then anthestist showed up. It was then that I started to get emotional and cry ( I have a fear of needles which is what I wad Blubbing about!). I remember holding the nurses hand and then the next thing I know I was waking up again and desperate to get back to my boyfriend and for a cuppa tea!!
Honestly, I'm scared of EVERYTHING and I feel like I breezed through my surgery! I've no doubt you'll do the same and you'll wonder what all the worry was about. Xx

Re: Fear of surgery
Aww CJA bless you!
Tanyajade - as others have said, don't worry - you'll be absolutely fine. I was put to sleep in a separate room too, so didn't see operating theatre, surgical instruments etc, just had a nice chat to the nurse while the anaesthetist done his thing with my right hand (honestly didn't feel it - he was so gentle) and that's all I remember.
Actually after all of my worrying, it was a really lovely experience - I was made to feel quite special, and I would do it all again tomorrow.
Good luck hunni - you'll breeze it.

Re: Fear of surgery
Hi Tanya. I walked to theatre and hopped up on the trolley, then got wheeled into a side room where the anaesthetist and a theatre nurse chatted and joked with me while the anaesthetist did his thing. My nerves only really kicked in when i was in that side room and then I got some drugs in my hand before the GA and wasn't worried about anything. I could see the theatre through the windows in the door but only lights, no instruments or anything scary. It's honestly nothing to worry about hun. Try to stay positive about things and keep telling yourself you'll be fine and have lovely new boobies at the end of it!

Re: Fear of surgery
Hi tanya, like you i was petrified and had those nightmares too, but like all the girls on here have said you DONT see the theatre, which is a blessing who wants to see all that. You want to be as calm as possible, all i remember is the lovely nurse stoking my cheek as the drugs took affect and that was it nothing until they wheeled me back to my bed, the drugs make you feel nice and dreamy for long time too
you will be just fine hun

Yeah like cookie says the nurses are sooo used to dealing with people who are terrified they will help put you at ease.
Im terrified of needles so when they were about to put it in i freaked out :O
The nurses were holdig my hand, stroking my hair and talking to me they really helped :)
Take deep breaths and keep telling yourself why youre doing it and it will be over in a flash :)
Good luck babe
