not allowed garlic?
Hi ive been told i cant have any garlic 2 weeks before my ba as well as no mushrooms or chilli and curry, this is fine but does it mean actual garlic? or any food which has garlic as an ingredient? this is very confusing, as i went shopping today and nearly everything has garlic in it!! so im going to have to live on beans on toast and bacon sarnies for a couple of weeks haha!!
Cant have any painkillers either?
does anyone know anything about this?
One more thing has anyone ever had their surgery date moved? mine has been put forward a day, which is really stressful as i had arranged everything for the saturday, and now i have to go to work on the friday, rush to the hospital and check in with my op being an hour later..this is NOT quite what i had expected my ba day to be like..

Re: not allowed garlic?
Hiya Izzie, garlic thins your blood hun. I've never heard of people not being able to eat currys etc, I thought you just couldn't take garlic suppliments.
Don't let the fact your date has been moved spoil things for you hun. Just enjoy your day.
xx

i wasn't told any of this but i did know about the garlic thing - all i did was avoid things that obviously contained a lot of garlic such as spag bol, currys etc. but i still ate everything else - i never went out of my way to check packets or anything i just avoided the obviously garlicky things. x

Re: not allowed garlic?
Garlic and certain other spices are blood thinners. The only advice my PS gave me was to avoid ibuprofen two weeks before. Therefore I made the choice to carry on eating garlic, chillies and spices, especially since garlic is good for your immune system. I think this is over the top for most people, and you'd have to consume a lot, I'd personally avoid high dose garlic supplements for instance. Having said that, you have to go with surgeon's recommendation, not pcc or nurse, but your own surgeon since he/she is the one performing the surgery, and you're paying for his/her service. Still absurd when you think most parts of the world eat a more varied diet in spices, and undergo surgery too (says person of Italian origin who loves garlic, and roles her eyes )

Re: not allowed garlic?
I did the going without garlic, and ibruprofaen etc i hate mushrooms so wouldnt have noticed if they said it. I cut out all garlic from my diet, it was really hard as I love it so much. But I was determined to follow the rules as much as possible.

Paracetemol is fine, and so long as your PS hasn't told you to stay away from certain foods, don't worry. I wasn't advised to avoid any foods, and ate garlic pretty much everyday leading up to surgery xxx
