advice from post op galz please!
This is really embarrassing, but I know it's quite common...... I am severely constipated! Haven't been for 6 days! Have taken senekot MAX Strength for the past two nights, nothing! Any advice??
Also, how long did it take for your swelling to start going down? Mine are like 2 hard melons at the moment!

Hi hun, i did have a bm until about 5 days post op, i would say drink a strong cup of coffee or some soft fruit like plums  it the GA and painkillers blocking you up, so perfectly normal.
Swelling takes 3-6 weeks to fully go down hun but they will start to soften soon xxx

Are you taking pain-killers with codeine in them? Codeine is very good at playng havoc with your stomach/bowels!!
If you can cut out the codeine you my find the senekot works. Good luck.

I had the same problem even though only for 3 days... I ate lots of fruit like dried plums and cooked apples (I know, it sounds disgusting but it's good for constipation) and lots of vegetables plus I also took a lxative... but as AP says it only worked when I stopped the codeine... if the pain is not so bad you can just take paracetamol for it, after 6 days it should be bearable.... the other thing I would suggest is to have a short walk every day if you can, as moving helps too xxx

Hi chick, I had this too, it's horrid, it looked like i was 6 months pregnant! I took ex-lax which worked really well over night. But i did find as soon as i'd stopped taking the co-codamol that the constipation went.
Good luck xxxxx

I had that after having a cesearean and my gynae threatened to give me an enema and that somehow made me go!! ok not a sensible answer i know - for something natural try syrup of figs from the chemist. also oranges seem to work really well for my son who suffers quite badly with constipation.
hope that, or something helps soon 'cos i know its a horrible feeling and the more you are stressing the worse it will be.

I agree about the codeine....great painkiller but awful stuff for your tummy. I took it before bed and the rest of the time made just made do with paracetamol and ibruprofen and it was fine. I also ate load of fruit, dried fruit etc and took a fybogel once or twice a day and that really helped.
My swelling took about 2-3 weeks to go down hun x

Hi Hunni
Sorry you're feeling so bloated. If fibogel doesn't work, you could try lactulose - that will hopefully get things moving, but also have lots of water and fruit.
Hope you feel better soon.

Hiya
You could try Dulcolax also...I had it before Ba and after and it worked, though I didn't have codeine as it makes me ill (woozy and sick feeling and dizzy, so I told them and I was given something else) The GA and the painkillers in general make you constipated, so if the fruit and stuff doesn't work try Dulcolax. It takes a week or so for the bloating to go down, but once you get your bowels moving, you feel less uncomfy..
Drink lots of water and juices too...
You'll be poo-ing through the eye of a needle in no time!!
