opinions on having drains?
I've recently had a couple of successful consults with surgeons and am currenly trying to weigh up which one to go with and haggle the price!
Anyway one of the surgeons told me how important she feels drains are and always uses them (it made sense when explained). The other surgeon has said he never uses them and are not needed.
Just wondering your opinions?

Re: opinions on having drains?
I've had a BA without drains and a BA and uplift with them and I didn't find a single bit of difference in my recovery hun.
I've found using drains to be a surgeons personal preference, some like to use them, some don't. xxx

Re: opinions on having drains?
Hi I had drains my first BA (which if honest I found horrendous) but this time my surgeon doesn't use them as he says in his opinion they aren't needed. He said they are there to show if there is any bleeding but if there is bleeding there will be swelling and if there is swelling the patient should be taken back to theatre to have this fixed therefore the drains in his opinion are useless and obviously he feels best for patient if they are not used.
I will say another surgeon however I had consult with did choose to use them. It is like Cookie says some use them some don't but there is no right/wrong way xxx

Re: opinions on having drains?
I had drains and they weren't a problem at all. I stayed over night (my choice) and they were taken out in the morning,- not at all painful, didn't really notice them being taken out, just a slight stinging sensation. I didn't have any swelling, so for me, they worked.

i had drains and im very glad i did, as youd be suprised how much blood and watery stuff that comes out even after youve been stitched up, so id rather have that out of my boobies, than left inside to disperse.i did have to have the drains tho as i had a higher risk of bleeding, so this just lessend the chances slightly.i didnt find them painful. just more of a pulling/tugging sensation when being removed x

Re: opinions on having drains?
I'm not sure how important having drains actually is, I mean surely if it was THAT important everyone surgeon would use them. I do know however, that it seems to just come down to the surgeons' personal choice.
I had drains and tbh it was one of the things that I was so worried about, I needn't worry at all as I can honestly say I didn't feel a thing when the nurse took them out.

James McDiarmid (the BAAPS reg plastic surgeon who helps with questions here) answered a post recently regarding drains - you can read what he said about them [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I didn't have drains, quite a few surgeons don't use them and like cookie said, it seems to be personal preference of the surgeon

Re: opinions on having drains?
Thanks girls - there doesnt seem to be a right or wrong decision does there. Im not bothered by the pain of the drains either way - after childbirth im slightly toughened i think! However its the coping with children after the op im most concerned about! x

Re: opinions on having drains?
I didn't have drains either, as the girls have said I think it's just personal preference.
