Stitches haven't dissolved Empty Stitches haven't dissolved

Post by leyla488 12th December 2009, 2:48 am

I'm 7 weeks post op - and now and again I'm experiencing undissolved bits of stitches poking out through my newly scarred nipples. Furthermore, I can feel the hard lumpy bits of undissolved stiches inside my breasts under the skin which is quite painful.
I rang my breast nurse and she said they were stitch knots, and once they break out the little hole left, normally heals quickly and without any problems. She said this does happen with an odd few people. Pity I had to be one of them!
Has anybody else experienced this, and do the stitches dissolve eventually? if not, what happens to the hard bits?

I had a couple of stitch knots that didn't disolve for ages. Just a waiting game really, they did disolve in the end. Mine were under the skin and did eventually go. I gently massaged mine, although it was a bit of a stabby pain, but that got the fluid around them, hence they disolved at last. Mine were both at the end of my crease scars, armpit end.

Dont be worried, you've got lots of changes to come, and unfortunately they all take ages longer than a straight forward BA Hug

HI hun i had the very same problem & the lumpy bits are very painful! I had them at the ends off my scars. One end the Knot came out and left me with a tiny hole that healed no problems but it was such a releaf once it was out! The other just stayed a hard lump inder the skin & im 9 weeks post-op & i can still just feel it but the pain has gone. I was told to keep my scars covered with steri-strips while the Knot came to the surface & found this helped ease the pain.

I had my 6 week check & still had bits off stich poking out off my scar line so my p.s dug them out.............it was gross! she exspained that some girls bodys cant break the stitches down so there bodys reject them to the surface.............I had the same with other ops so im not a fan of dissolverble stiches!

Thanks to everyone for this information - I really appreciate the support. I did try using the micropore tape over the scars which my surgeon does recommend but it seemed to irritate and cause redness so when I spoke to the breast nurse she advised me not to use it.

When the hard bits of stitches poked through they only left relatively small holes which have healed over quickly so providing I can avoid any infection I should be ok I think. It's always better when you understand what's going on.

I will try gently massaging the lumpy bits, I did do that with one and I felt it break up under the skin so I know you are right.`

Thanks a million Stitches haven't dissolved 184153 xxx
