Re: Any Tips for GA - getting nervous now
Hi hun!
Don't worry! It's perfectly natural to be feeling the nerves now especially if it is the first time you are going under GA. My anaesthetist was lovely and reassuring... he visited my room in the hospital before my surgeon and talked me through the GA procedure... when I was eventually on the bed waiting to be put under they inserted the cannula into my hand and he said "im going to give you something now which will make you feel like you've had a few too many wines, so think nice thouhgts and then you'll feel like going to sleep" - it was a very nice feeling drifting off, nothing to be scared about at all. Good luck hun xxx

Re: Any Tips for GA - getting nervous now
I don't think there are any tips out there babe, it's natural to feel nervous I think...
I wasn't at all nervous about the GA until the day of my surgery and it was saying goodbye to my children that kicked me off and got me thinking about "what if I don't wake up!!!!"...
I just put my fears to the back of my mind, knowing having read many women feeling the same that it's just normal to feel that way, however, I kicked off again when I had to say goodbye to my hubby as they took down to theatre LOL...
You'll find the staff are so used to us girls feeling this way and have a fantastic knack of putting you at ease...
The moment you get into theatre, you're knocked out anyway and don't really have time to think beyond, 'oh right, the catheter is going in now'... after that you're out cold anyway babe and waking up thinking 'when will I go asleep'! Heeheeeee....
Just keep baring in mind that how you feel is normal and we've all felt as you do and all lived to tell the tale...

Hi Hun
Like the others say its all completely normal what your feeling, I think we were all probably the same. It is fine, my anaethatist just told me he was going to give me a cocktail and then I dont remember a thing, I actually woke up saying that I wasnt under and I was awake only to be told I had had my BA!! Its all over in a jiffy!!
Good luck babes xxx

Re: Any Tips for GA - getting nervous now
i had my 1st ga for my ba too. I like u was very nervous and didn't know what to expect. I think it's more fear of the unknown. U dont know what it feels like so cant prepare yourself. All i can compare it to is having an injection at the dentist where they numb ur mouth but instead of being numb u fall asleep. It doesn't hurt. Its so quick. Dont worry u will be fine.
Re: Any Tips for GA - getting nervous now
I was in hell of a state on the build up to my op. But on the day I was really relaxed.
The theatre nurse talked the whole time so I didn't see a thing or worry about anything. I loved it! I fell asleep and then woke up all cosy and warm.
You will be in safe hands. Don't worry x x

Re: Any Tips for GA - getting nervous now
Honestly hun you'll be fine. From my experience the theatre nurse chats to you to take your mind of the needle going in and then the next thing you're waking up in your room.
You probably will be nervous, it's only natural, but you really have nothing to worry about.
Good luck hun.

Re: Any Tips for GA - getting nervous now
My only tip is to completely trust the team looking after you. They have done thousands of ops before and a BA is considered a very safe, quick surgical procedure.
I was ok going in the room but just before they put the meds in my pulse shot up and the ODA said 'ooh youve just got nervous havent you?' I couldnt reply properly cos I suddenly felt all woozy and last thing I remember was someone saying 'we are all looking after you' which was so reassuring and just what I needed to hear.
You will be fine chick I promise.

Try not to worry too much hun, remember you will be in the care of a team of trained professionals.
My GA was quite funny, they put the cannula and the anaesthetic in, talked to me for a few minutes then started talking to each other about the op! I was lying there waiting for the GA to take effect and they noticed I hadn't nodded off yet and they started panicking asking me daft questions about the weather. I could see they were thinking "why isn't she asleep yet?" and I said "it's ok, I'm going", next thing I knew I was in recovery wrapped up in a tinfoil banket

Not long to go lovely, you'll be fine, there's so much that goes on on the day you won't have time to feel too nervous. Just make sure you have something to distract you in case there are any delays.
