How soon did you drive?
Hi all
I'm currently 5 days post op and go back to work thurs (9 days post op) but need to drop kids to childminders weds! How soon did you start driving again? Have more movement in my arms now but still achey! If my op hadn't of been cancelled first time roubd, I would have had a full 17 days before driving but as op was tues, didn't get the extra weekend days etc!

Re: How soon did you drive?
I drove around 2 weeks post op.
You must be able to perform an emergency stop, and maybe see if you're covered by your insurer .
The usual is around a week however for some it can be nearer 2 or 3 x

I have the same problem 5th gear is a bugger ! I drove at two weeks post op very small distances and making sure I took a route I didn't have to reverse etc . Three weeks post op and well away with driving now! In fact collected a new car yesterday and had two hour drive home

Re: How soon did you drive?
Ooh! Hadn't even thought about the hand brake! It's those little things like opening jars, wiping surfaces etc which you really notice! Thanks ladies! Will see how it goes weds and if my 2 year old takes bribes to get straight into the car seat himself rather than playing about!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], feeling better everyday! Just achey in the morning and at the end of the day when I've done too much! Luck though as have showerproof dressings so have been able to shower from day 1! Would feel awful if I couldnt! Xx

Re: How soon did you drive?
In my car there is a way of getting it into fifth gear I have to do a little trick with the movement on the gear stick but I've only been driving 2 mins down the road to save me walking in the rain. No parking etc as that hurt to turn at two weeks and the handbrake hurt abit too.

3 weeks for me. 9 days is a bit too early, you could damage yourself x

Re: How soon did you drive?
I drove after 1 week per my surgeons advice but I found it uncomfortable so I didn't drive again for a further week. That said, the journey was an hour long so perhaps too long (my surgeon knew). Just see how it goes, take your time, and listen to your body!

Re: How soon did you drive?
Legally you can't drive until 48hrs after GA, or until you're able to perform an emergency stop. After that, it's up to you and when you're comfortable to. For me it was 3wks, but only because I didn't have to until then. It'll be easier if you have an auto, and 5th will be a bu99er for a while if you don't. Maybe try a small drive around the block to make sure you're able to cope without hurting yourself

Re: How soon did you drive?
I drove at 2 weeks I think. I might have managed sooner I'm not sure as I didn't try. Like others have said, it was the gear change that I found difficult, but I have armrests in my car which gave my gear changing arm a support which did help massively x

Re: How soon did you drive?
Hi @goingforit! Managed a short drive to childminder and bribed 2 year old to get into car seat himself! Worst was reversing and reaching back for seat belt! Found driving the way you do with your car test the easiest rather than crossing arms! Longer journey thurs x

Haha that's funny about your 2 year old. I've got one too so would have to do the same with him! Glad it wasn't too bad and thanks for letting me know xx

Re: How soon did you drive?
Becky I'm glad to hear it went well and your little one was able to jump into the car seat :)
I got back in the drivers seat today... Barely anyone in the office so no one to pick me up.
I was told if I couldn't drive then not to worry about coming in, since I had it booked as holiday anyway.
Only 5 miles but all through narrow villages and up hills.
Seat belt was fine, Gears were fine, my gear box is quite smooth so I had no problems there.
When turning a sharp/long corner you cant put one hand over the other. lol Becky, you made me smile when I read you said that as well. Really do have to 'feed' the steering wheel around.
I reverse parked (have a phobia of going in forwards) and I could feel muscles pulling put no pain.
Thankfully I have an auto hand break, I think that would have been the worst bit..
So all in all... we're back in the drivers seat!!
And maybe I will get home this weekend
