Will past depression stop my BA???
Hi everyone, sorry if this has been asked before I couldn't find anything about his topic, I had my pre op today, everything was paid in full at consultation around a fortnight ago, but now the nurse is saying they have to write to my Dr about depression I've had in the past, will this delay my surgery? I'm due to get my BA on the 25th of this month and I'm now worried incase they cancel it, the last time I suffered from depression was around 3 month's ago and took tablets for around 4 days as they made me feel sick and have been fine since, has anyone had a BA that has suffered with depression and what there Dr replied to the company? I don't even know who my set Dr is as it's a walk in clinic I've never seen the same Dr twice so don't have a good relationship with any of them as I never see the same one lol
sorry for rambling and thank you in advance :) xxx

Re: Will past depression stop my BA???
Hi :) My surgeon wrote to my GP as well and they gave the 'ok'. I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and depression and I got the go ahead so i'm sure you'll be fine!! If you're worried then give your surgery a call and ask to speak with your GP - I'm sure they'll be able to discuss with you whether they had any concerns x

Hi, try not to worry. Im sure its just a formality to cover themselves.
They have to check whether you will be OK to have surgery and cope with it all I guess.
Im sure you will be fine :)

No worries!! I was really worried about it too because there's a lot of stigma and sometimes people think you're unable to make an informed decision. I think it's more like if you have Body Dysmorphia or anything like that it would be more of a concern. You'll be fine petal x

Its absolutely about informed decisions, and making sure you're not thinking this is going to solve all of your lifes problems. I think I was lucky and got away with it, as my 'documented' depression was over 5yrs ago. But your GP will have on record that you stopped the meds, and are sound of mind. It should all be fine.

Sorry, I should clarify that point - It wasn't that I got away with it, it was that although I listed it on my medical history, they never looked into it as it was 5+ yrs ago. Im not sneaking around like a loon getting surgeries whilst heavily medicated!!

Haha I know what you mean :) I feel like I didn't need them a few months bank anyway think I was just having a bad few weeks with a lot going on at home, none of my depression has been about wanting a BA so hopefully they will see that :) thanks for your replies :) xx

Re: Will past depression stop my BA???
Hi I've just joined and noticed this post as I'm currently on medication for mild depression and anxiety. Is this likely to go against me? I've been on meds for most of my adult life aso they make me feel 'normal'. Would I need to wait until I come off them completely? Thanks x

As long as you disclose them, you shouldn't have to come off them. They should be able to adjust the GA accordingly. It is something you should be open and honest about in your consults though, because it may affect the surgery. The clinic may contact your GP to ask about it too, but this is normally to make sure your depression isn't linked to body dysmorphia, and that you're making a sound decision. But they shouldn't stop you having the surgery. Just explain exactly what you're on, and they'll advise.
