Hi girls I'm 11 days post op and I just can't sleep sitting up anymore! I've got a bad back stiff neck and can't sleep for any longer than an hour at a time can I sleep on my back just not up right any advice? And does any one no why you have to sit up right is it to reduce swelling? Xxx

Re: Sleeping upright! :-(
Aw, babe, I'm sorry to hear you're suffering from this discomfort. I'm not sure as to why you have to sleep upright however I know that I slept upright for 4 whole weeks because I found it difficult ti breathe if i lay down.
Is there any way you can try and knock yourself out before going to sleep - E.g could you have a big mug of something milky? Maybe eat some porridge oats or a banana before bed too? Maybe take some Night Nurse or sleeping tablets? Maybe read a book or take a hot bath?
I'm not sure what other things to suggest, babe. Could you lower yourself a bit and then just gradually get lower over the days? Also, why don't you ring your nurse/surgeon and ask how long you have to sleep upright for? If you're 11 days post-op I expect it shouldn't be too much longer.
I hope you're okay!! Take care, lovely, and good luck!! Xxxxx

You don't need to sleep sitting up, it's recommended that you have your head and shoulder elevated which can be achieved with approx 2 pillows.
Re: Sleeping upright! :-(
I slept in a reclining chair for 6 days and now have 4 pillows. But yep my back is hurting and i desperately want to sleep on my side but it's to uncomfortable.
May try losing another pillow tonight x

Re: Sleeping upright! :-(
yup like misf said, you don't need to sleep sitting up as such (though i found it easier to get up out of bed without using my arms, the higher i lay), so 2-3 pillows should do the trick x

Re: Sleeping upright! :-(
You just need you shoulders above your heart. Its to help drain away the excess fluid and to assist blood flow I think. Normally you only need do it for 1-2 weeks, so you're nearly on the other side. Get yourself as comfy as possible, and add pillows under your back, bum and knees to keep you in place. And kip whenever you can. I spend a week with a travel pillow round my neck so I could literally pass out at any time. Hubs was making me lunch, came in to find me spark out upright on the couch watching Buffy!

Re: Sleeping upright! :-(
V pillows are pretty useful but even at that I found lying in a static position murder on my bum and heels too . I can safely say it took me 6 weeks before I got a full nights sleep :(
