sternum pain? Empty sternum pain?

Post by JordanG92 30th December 2013, 9:33 am

Morning all.
I've had my boobs a couple of days now and the boobs themselves don't feel too bad but I'm getting really horrible pains in my sternum (I think thats what its called- the bit inbetween my boobs). Its really achey, almost to the point that it feels like its burning, especially when I get up from bed or sitting down. I can't see much cos I'm all strapped up at the moment but am I right in thinking that its just swelling and normal post op pains? xx

Totally agree with Tink babe.

Because of the swelling it can raise your sternum away from your chest and it can be quite sore.

Tinks given excellent advice with the ice packs. Mine lasted months there I have to say.... But eventaully settled down. Xx

Thank you both! I took my bandages off this morning (as instructed) and it does actually look raised and a bit bruised so I'm chilling out with the ice packs (no pun intended!) and they're really helping already xx

Icepacks are THE BEST! I'd have never have gotten through my second surgery with those, they're really are amazing. They help through swelling, nerve pain and aching. I used them right the way through my recovery. Best investment for women having a BA (alongside the V-pillow EVER!)

Its important you don't put them anywhere near your incisions though because it can restrict the blood flow. Xx

Yeah I've just tucked them in at the top so they are well away from my incisions. I'm so paranoid about anything going near them so I'm keeping everything away from them xx

Yeah mine has gone down a lot today, it looked quite funny at first cos it was so swollen it was like I had one big massive boob :P
I highly recommend the ice packs Soosie, or even just a bag of frozen peas, they really help :) xx

Everyone else's suggestions are amazing about the ice packs! I'm going through the same as you, babe. My sternum is still very, very swollen and inflamed and i'm 12 days post-op! It's also filled with lots of fluid and is painful to touch or compress..
Don't worry, my nurse says its completely normal, honey xxxxx
