Shoulder injury..could op be postponed? Empty Shoulder injury..could op be postponed?

Post by missindependant88 27th October 2013, 10:20 am

Hi girls,

I've sustained a nasty shoulder injury (overstretched tendon leading into bicep and at risk of tearing) 3 weeks b4 my op!! Am seeing an osteopath and receiving acupuncture but am a fitness instructor.

Am doing all I know to aid my recovery, including cancelling classes (even though don't wanna) but am now so scared that if i'm not healed in time my op will be postponed? Surely THG will say I elected to have the surgery on that date and they'll wait until it's healed?

The thing is it's taken so much planning and organising to get to this stage, re-arranging venues, letting customers down, sorting out work and sick pay etc (I have another job) and I just can't let this stop me having my boobs on the 22nd Nov.

Any thoughts anyone? Would they still do it if I was recovering from a sports injury?

Sweetie, you'll be just fine.

I'm unable to walk hun, I need my arms to enable me transfer bad to chair etc, but because of the op would be unable t use them.. But I was fine to have my op as long as I had help in place at home to look after me.

I very much doubt things will be as difficult as that, but non the less painful for you babe Hug so I have no doubt at all that your op will go away just as arranged.

As long as there's no infection there at all that is...just get your GP to keep a close eye on your healing hun. If there is any infection involved this would be the only reason they'd cancel hun... Or if they didn't think you could cope. Xx

Personally I'd go to my GP to get an urgent referral to a physiotherapist or occupational therapist specialising in shoulders. An orthopaedic surgeon would be pretty useless in telling you about time scales for recovery etc. if its just over stretched and not actually torn or fragmented in anyway (inc the bones / attachments are intact) then I'd continue to take the non steroidal anti inflammatories eg ibuprofen and maybe get some steroidals such as naproxen from GP to aid healing as then assuming you are not in pain, go for the ba. Call your plastic surgeon too to check re these drugs as some surgeons pref no NSAIDs pre op, but others dont mind. From a surgcal perspective, a ba is by no means major surgery as its not going near big bones /arteries/ organs, its all relatively superficial. Plus -, A lot can change in a few weeks and assuming / hoping you haven't actually done structural damage to joint, muscle or bone, it should heal. If anything the rest you'll do post ba should help (as long as you're doing some gentle passive ranging exercises too).... Get some advice from a medical professional ideally with an x ray (MRI would be ideal but unrealistic unless you have private medical insurance....) xxx good luck xxx

The op itself shouldn't be a problem, as long as you're fit and healthy on the inside and have someone around to help out.
What I'd be concerned for is your shoulder and ongoing therapy post op. Will you still be in physio at this point? My Osteo wanted nothing to do with me until I was 3m post, and is still very cautious with me. Mines back problems, so shoulder might not be so bad, but it'll still take a couple weeks before you have full arm movement back.
