Scared of the GA :(
Hi girls,
My BA is just over a month away and while I am extremely excited, I am terrified of the GA. I have got it into my mind that I will become brain dead. Or that I won't be fully asleep and will be floating in and out of consciousness. I am a light sleeper and it often takes me a little while to fall asleep, plus I wake up during the night. I'm scared that the GA will go wrong or I will be left with some sort of long-term medical condition :( xx

Re: Scared of the GA :(
You'll know from the ungodly hours I'm up posting on here what a terrible sleeper I am babe... Honestly, I barely sleep at all, but that GA - eyes open as I hear a voice we're sending you to sleep now, BLINK eyes open and "congratualtions on your new boobs"
I swear to you hun that its honestly that simple. The anaesthetists are fantastic too. You have time to chat with them prior to surgery. They will come and see after your surgeon. Just tell them all your fears and they'll put you completely at ease.
You've been here for a good while now hun and every single story you've read from our girlies after their op, they're all happy aren't they? That will be YOU when you have yours done - HAPPY
Focus on the prize babe. The GA is just a stepping stone to reach it. Xx

Re: Scared of the GA :(
Thank you Cookie. Can always rely on you for reassurance! That's made me feel loads better, I'm going to save that message. I wasn't aware I would be talking to the anaesthetist before my BA so that's really good to know! Don't get me wrong, I am soooo looking forward to my BA and not really nervous about the actual procedure but the GA is scaring me! Hopefully it won't be from now on :) xx

Hey goldilocks!! Not long for you now :) I'm a light sleeper too, I drive my boyf mad. I am a bit anxious about the ga but I think that's normal, I've had a ga and honestly it feels like nothing has happened, it feels like seconds have gone by and it's all ok :) I'm looking forward to hearing how your getting on as it gets nearer! Re: Scared of the GA :(
This was my biggest worry of the whole thing, but please please be assured you have nothing to worry about. The anaesthetist was lovely very funny and I didn't even realise what he was doing! I said what if I don't wake up and he laughed and said sorry love but there are 7 more after you we will be waking you up!!! I came round fine but weird thing was I dreamt I had fad my boobs done!! Please don't worry in the slightest there is no need xx

Re: Scared of the GA :(
I was terrified of the GA and I almost had a panic attack on the table as they were knocking me out but honestly it is fine and the anesthetist will come and chat to you prior to the surgery. In fact I saw the anaesthetist before I saw Mrs Kat. He then saw me post op and then again prior to discharge. When I had my revision he did most of my care as the issues I had were drug related and the pain relief you get etc is all prescribed by the anesthetist so it was his area of expertise.. as I left he said "in future.... paracetamol only!" When he sees me again in January (for my tummu tuck!) I think he is gonna faint! I made his job hard work last time!!!

Re: Scared of the GA :(
You're having a tummy tuck 5stone?! Wow!
Thank you girls. It's so good to know you've both had great experiences. I'm assuming I'll have the same anaesthetist? I thought it'd be a female for some reason. I'm so glad I will have the chance to chat to him beforehand, I'm sure he's probably heard all of my woes and concerns before. Hopefully it'll be over in a flash and I won't know what I was worried about! xx

Re: Scared of the GA :(
I think there is a different anaesthetist at each of the hospitals. I had my surgery in the Spire Parkway and the anaesthetist was Dr Bannorah. I am having a tummy tuck yes!! Getting rid of my flap of skin at last... seeing Mrs Kat for a consult on 2nd July and hopefully booking in for the 15th Jan!

Re: Scared of the GA :(
GA is scary, but the horrific things like waking up halfway through, being paralysed etc are extremely rare. I bawled like a baby just before I had mine, didn't help that THG gave me a booklet about GA and in the side effects, it said something like.. "rare side effects: death". I was like :|:| you'll be fine x

Re: Scared of the GA :(
Hiya,
The GA for me was the bit that scared me most believe it or not, I hate injections and am petrified of needles. I like you was scared of waking up through the surgery but my anaesthetist put my mind at easy as soon as I met him. Like cookie said it was literally one min I was awake chatting to the nurse in the anaesthetist room, next thing I'm back in my room with my mum talking absolute rubbish!!
Please don't worry, they know u will be nervous and will put u at ease.

Aww Hun x it was the only part of my surgery that terrified me! I was worried I wouldn't wake up, and leave my kids with no mum! And when it came down to it, it was all very calm, everyone was very friendly and reassuring! I promise you goldi, you will be fine! The fear of the GA is much worse than the GA itself x

Re: Scared of the GA :(
Aww thank you all so much. You've put my mind at ease a little (although I'm still thinking that death is a potential side effect and that has to have happened to SOMEONE for it to be on the list, eek!) The fear of GA won't stop me though. I've wanted this for so long and feel very ready. Bring it on!
P.S. 5stonedown, I applaud you for going for it! And you obviously have a lot of faith in Mrs Kat which I'm very chuffed to hear!! xx

Re: Scared of the GA :(
The thing is yes someone has to be the "1" person in how ever many to die under a GA but the people that do usually have all sorts of health problems that meant it was a risky thing to do anyway.. people with diabetes, raised BMI, that kind of thing! You are young fit and healthy and you will be fine. Plus everything has a risk attached to it.. every time you get in a car you could argue that you could be the 1 in however many that dies in a car accident... its a balanced risk and as I said you are young fit and healthy!!
I do have 100% faith in Mrs Kat.. I trust her with my life and I just wouldnt feel comfortable in the hands of anyone else when it comes to my body. I cant wait to see her on 2nd July and get booked and get my next countdown on the go!!!

Re: Scared of the GA :(
I hope you feel reassured by the comments - I work in a hospital (for a surgeon, but not a plastic surgeon!) and the anaesthetist I had also worked with my consultant at work a few years earlier. Once I knew this I was totally put at ease - small world I thought as he put me to sleep - but it was absolutely fine. 5stonedown is right miss kat has a different anaesthetist at each hospital, but whoever you have your in safe hands I promise x

Re: Scared of the GA :(
Thanks girls, I'm going to Spire Little Aston for my BA as it's on a Saturday. Really looking forward to it. 5stonedown, I agree, I would trust Mrs Kat with my life. I don't know if it's because she's a woman but I feel so much more reassured than with the other surgeons I consulted with. I am so excited for you and your tummy tuck. I have been looking at Mrs Kat's price list to see if I could have any other procedures with her! xx

Re: Scared of the GA :(
What days does she operate in the little aston?? I know she does a wed in the parkway and a sat at the little aston but does she do any other days there?? I know she works in the BMI too but not sure on those days!! Just trying to work out the best place to go depending on the date... its prob gonna be the parkway though cos I only work 2 days a week and our weeks start on a sunday so I could work 2 days out of the sun, mon or tue then have the rest of the week off without taking holidays and get the surgery on the wed and then have 2 weeks annual leave and then on the last week request to work the fri and sat so that in total I get the 3 and a half weeks off following the surgery!

Re: Scared of the GA :(
Hi I think she only operates at little Aston on a Saturday - that was the only day given to me and as i literally live up the road from the hospital it was my first choice. So far have been very impressed with her and the surgery not a single bruise in site! Xx

Re: Scared of the GA :(
I went to the parkway last time for my BA and uplift but just wondered whether it was worth looking at the other hospitals... probably go to the parkway again as the care was fantastic and the day suits!! I live 2 hours away so gonna have to travel regardless of the hospital!! Although me an fiance are going to stay local for a week following the TT as its a bigger op with a more hardcore recovery and I will be 2 nights in hospital so I am staying close by until I have seen Mrs Kat for my 1 week post op check!

Happy1day: I am sooo jealous you live so close to Little Aston, I'm 3 hours away! Do you have a picture trail by any chance? xx

Re: Scared of the GA :(
Hi girls,
Not really nervous at all, I've wanted this for ages and have a good idea of what I'm letting myself in for so I'm excited more than anything which, for someone who worries a lot like I do, is a refreshing change! I'm sure the nerves will kick in as time goes on. It doesn't quite seem 'real' yet, almost like a fairy tale or something that's not really going to happen!! Ohhh, so excited to see your pic trail! Best of luck for your appointment and please let us know how it goes hun!
5stonedown: I don't really know much about the furry Brazilians. Would love to read more about them but to be honest, whenever I google them, I seem to unearth so many negative sources and very few positive so I will remain in the dark! xx
