DVT Stockings
How long were you told to keep your stocking on for?
I've been told that I have to keep them on 24-7 for 6 weeks
They are itchy and I dont like them!!

Re: DVT Stockings
2 days :)
It depends how much you're walking around - if you walk a normal amount you shouldn't need them as your calf muscles support the veins. If you're laid up - you need to wear them.
And you should do as you're told!! Even if it seems wrong

Re: DVT Stockings
I have just had my op and been told 6 weeks. They are a pain as keep rolling and make me hot at night. In theory, once you are active your calf muscle acts as a pump again to encourage your blow flow in your veins so some surgeons may say they are not needed for as long. However, I am a nurse and have had alot of experience of people with DVTs and PEs and so am too scared to take mine off!

Re: DVT Stockings
My dad suffers with DVT's in his legs and is on warfarrin for the rest of his life, so I should really listen to my surgeon, but they are just so damn uncomfortable.
Oh well, only another 5 weeks and 5 days to go!!

Oh my days I thought a day would be a day too long! Let's hope for a cold summer then, I don't think they'd go well with shorts and flip flops

Re: DVT Stockings
I didnt have any on from I left the hospital. And when we discharge post op surg patients we never send them home with them.. maybe its a new protocol in england? I can see the idea behind it though, you go home and lead a more sedentary life for a few weeks post op so it makes sense really.. dreadful things though!

Re: DVT Stockings
If the stockings are causing you so much discomfort hun then if you have contact with your surgeon you could always Email them and ask as you're so uncomfortable if they really feel the stocking are necessary for so long. Or call your clinic and request an answer from your surgeon through them if that's your only way of contact.
Usually as the ladies have said, once you're up and mobile the stocking are no longer necessary, but working on a case by case basis your surgeon may feel this is necessary for 'you' so best do as you're told sweetie, follow 'your' surgery plan unless instructed otherwise by your surgeon. xx
