Can i leave my tongue stud in?
Can i leave my tongue stud in for my BA? My pre-op check up appointment is next week so i guess i could ask then. I dont really want it taken out though, it might not go back in! I've had it done 11 years now and would feel bare without it!

Sorry Vicks, it has to come out. Shouldn't heal up in that amount of time though, particularly as you've had it for so long. They don't want the airways obstructed.

Re: Can i leave my tongue stud in?
Weird, I'd have thought you could keep it in. I kept a lot of mine in (couldn't get them out!) but had to tape them.
My PS told me its because they use an electric charged thing to cauterize the wounds while they're operating and because the operating table is metal if the body jewelry comes in contact with the table your body potentially becomes a conductor and you go 'live'!! But he also said the anaesatist would be up by my head the whole time, so he'd be able to make sure my taped up ears didn't touch the table... Which is why I'd have thought your tongue wouldn't be a problem... Other than a possible choking hazard...

Re: Can i leave my tongue stud in?
Tongue stud and any piercings around the mouth area have to be removed completely.
Nipple piercings have to be removed completely.
I am gutted as they were my favourite piercings and despite having them over 8years seem to close up really quickly and because of the swelling i can't get them back in :-(
Any other piercings it is dependant on the surgeon. I was allowed to leave my belly button piercing in as I had changed it to a plastic bar (bioplast or PTFE) but I had to sign a form and they taped it up. I only kept that one is as it is less than 6 months old, everything else I removed.
No metal jewellery is allowed. The cauterizing process passes an electrical current through you - if that comes into contact with metal it can earth and cause a burn.

Re: Can i leave my tongue stud in?
The only piercings I was allowed to keep in were my dermal implants in my arm, although they had to be covered and marked on my notes.
Make sure that your body jewellery is close to your bed and put it back in as soon as possible. My nose and one of my tunnels were a bit tight so if you're worried about it closing up maybe leave it until the last minute before taking it out.
