Lymph node removal
hi i posted this in the general forum but wanted a professional view on it as i dont know what to do. I have a couple of lymph nodes under my arm that have silicone in them after having a scan on the NHS to confirm this. I went to see a private plastic surgeon who said that they would remove and replace my implants and also the nodes at the same time, but after this i found another lump in my breast, went back to the NHS to check it was nothing else and mentioned about my planned surgery, but he warned me that i may get arm swelling after removing the nodes. I dont know if this would be permanent and also if its a small chance in it happening, so would like to hear some professional advice on this as i dont know what to do now.
Thankyou
Thankyou

Re: Lymph node removal
Hi
It really depends upon how large these nodes are and how high up in the armpit they are.
As a general rule a couple of timy lymph nodes containing silicone can be left and monitored but larger ones I would remove.
The risk of arm swelling (lymphoedema) is not easily predicted - again a general rule is that the more nodes that need to be removed, and the deeper they are in the armpit, the more risk there is - although I have seen swelling from single node removal and no swelling even when all the nodes are removed - so its a very individual and unpredicatable thing. Swelling may be permanent. I think the best way forward is to make sure your surgeon is familiar with lymph node removal and take their advice - a fully trained Pastic Surgeon - look for FRCS(plast) will give you good advice.
I hope that helps a bit .
