Lymph node removal Empty Lymph node removal

Post by ann77 14th November 2011, 6:14 pm

Hi i am posting in here as i dont think many people read the complications forum page much.
I am due to have a couple of lymph nodes removed from my armpits due to
leakage of silicone from the implants i had put in 5 years ago. I have
seen a surgeon who is willing to change the implants and remove the
nodes, but i saw a doctor on the NHS(to check the lumps werent
cancerous) and he said i should be careful about having the lymph nodes
removed as it can cause a lot of swelling in the arm. So i am just
wondering if anyone has had it done and if they had any swelling in the
arm and how long it lasted? any info appreciated as i am unsure what to
do now.

surely thenswelling would only be temporary wouldnt it?
I havent had the same as u but i have had a lymph node removed from my groin for biopsy a couple of years ago and my mum has them taken out all the time to check the stage of her lymphoma and although there is swelling initially it goes down pretty quick. I would have thought leaving it there could cause more problems. Although i'm obviously not an expert on this xx good luck hunxxx

Hiya! I'm new to this forum and this is one of the questions I was going
to ask! Have you found out any more since your first post?

I
found out last Wednesday that one of my implants has ruptured and am
going to see my original PS next Friday. When I called to make an
appointment with him, the lady I spoke to said I may need to have my lymph
nodes removed, too... I have since done a bit of desktop research about
it and have scared myself to death about having them removed! But then
again, I'm really scared about keeping them in as well!! xxx

My neighbor had 12 removed and they removed he drains and now has to wear a compression on her whole arm. They are not sure if it will be a permanent thing yet. Not sure if that helps.

Hiya! Thanks for your reply!

Yikes! I don't like the sound of that, but I don't like the sound of living with silicone-filled lymph nodes, either! I'm seeing my surgeon next week, but TBH I'm not sure I believe a word he says anymore!

Mmm that was what i was worried about whether it would be a permanent thing! as the NHS doc said sometime the private docs dont tell you all the side effects and i was reading about a lady having some lymph nodes removed which were cancerous and had permanent swelling in the arm. So really stuck as to whether to leave them there or not, like la violette, i dont really want to leave them there.
La violette can you tell me what your surgeon says when you go to see him, would be good to chat with you more about the implants you have etc

Hi Ann77,
Thanks for your reply. I've been doing quite a lot of research on the Internet today and saw something about silicone-filled lymph nodes causing Lymphoma in later years and had pretty much made up my mind to have them out... but permanent swelling in the arm...???
When are you getting your implants replaced?
I will let you know what my surgeon says, but TBH I don't believe a word he says anymore! He never mentioned that this could happen in the first place!! Have you sought legal advice?

hi La Violette,
Yeah i just dont know what to do now, i am supposed to be getting them replaced anytime now, they are just waiting to hear from me on what i want to do. I am not going back to my original surgeon.
Well might arent PIPs so i dont know if i can do much about it, i tried to look into legal action against the implant company but they havent actually burst, apparently microscopic parts of the silicone has leaked into the glands, but my surgeon reckons that the implants will still be intact when he removes them.
I can PM on here yet, have you got an email or phone i could maybe have a chat with you that way. I dont know if you can put them on here?
