MRSA Screening
Hi girls,
This might sound like a strange question to some but it's played on my mind!
Did anyone get MRSA screened pre-op and do the results affect surgery?
I work in a clinical setting and nurse people with MRSA on a daily basis which makes it likely that I, like many others in the general population am a carrier of MRSA! I wondered if my results return positive they may not allow me to have surgery incase it gets into my incision wounds :S
Or am I panicking for no reason?

Re: MRSA Screening
I'm not 100% sure on this but I think they just give you the antibiotic ointment (the name of which escapes me for the moment) to put up your nose for a few days before you're due to go in

Re: MRSA Screening
That would be a relief!! I thought this might be the case but then I had an extreme panic and thought what if they postpone until I get a clear screen?, as Transform (the Pines anyway) seem set on having had no cases I thought they'd try and ban me from the theatre!! Lol Xx

Re: MRSA Screening
If you are, you get treated. I was screened for MRSA and in the run up to my op i spent two weeks in the hospital with my grandad where it was rife for MRSA and everything was ok.. if you havent had the blood taken etc, drink loads of water so you are not dehydrated cos they wont get any blood... i drank a btl of wine the nyt b4 and was seriously dehydrated and the blood driped out and had to use 3 veins lol not good! x

Re: MRSA Screening
I had the MRSA test also - this was because I had been in another hospital 6 weeks before for another operation - I panicked and asked what would happen if found to be positive and the nurse assured me it would not cancel my BA. I cant remeber exactly what she said they would do treatment wise - but I was relieved it wouldnt mean cancelling op - so hopefully you will be fine x Good Luck x p.s they just swabbed my nose & mouth with a cotton bud.

Re: MRSA Screening
Just a quick update!!
I had my MRSA screen at my pre-op on September 29th and as I'm a healthcare worker i was convinced they would come back positive as there are rumours around our hospital that upto 50% of the general population have MRSA without it causing problems! (This is not true)
I explained my concerns to the nurse and she said that out of healthcare workers screened only 0.1% are positive, less common infact than anyone not in the healthcare profession (she believed because Healthcare professionals are more vigilant with handwashing technique?).
Finally i asked if they were positive would it delay my surgery, and at the Pines it would mean that, if positive, i would have 5 days of treatment and need to have 3 negative re-screens before they could continue!!
Result: Negative (Praise the Lord)
