Re: Scar massage
Well, he just advised to start massaging them as soon as I could after my 7 day post op check. He didnt say how long to continue.
Sort of gave up after 3mths but occasionally give it a little go, just in case!

Re: Scar massage
So complicated as we all get such different advice. I was told to leave scars well alone but massage the breasts from 2 weeks. No bio oil or anything in case of infection. Have another appointment next week so will add this to my huge list of questions.

Re: Scar massage
I'd advise to follow your surgeon's suggestions and if unsure, call him. Doing anything less/more than what you've been told can cause problems with aftercare.
Re: Scar massage
The nurse just e-mailed me saying I can massage my scars form 3 weeks, which is tomorrow..... I have no idea how and cant seem to find a thread. can anyone help please?? x

Re: Scar massage
I'm curious about this too, I haven't been massaging scars or boobies my PS didn't tell me to and nurse said it was unnecessary, but now I'm wondering if it would have helped since my scars are a bit thick and bumpy....
Anyone know if 6 months Post Op is too late to start massaging?

Re: Scar massage
Apparently it prevents hypotrophic scars (lumpy red scars).
I had nasty keloid scars after caesareans and have beed advised by a few ps's to start massaging them after about a week.
On one side my scar is still slightly red a very slightly thicker so have now started using Dermatix silicone tape. (Will try anything!)

Re: Scar massage
I wasnt told how to massage either just told to apply bio oil 6 weeks after the ba, , I lightly rub oil on the scars and make sure they are dry before putting the sports bra back on.
Not sure if this is the right thing to do, but would be interesting to hear what other have to say.
Needboobs I used silicone tape for about 6-7 weeks, was advised at my 2 week follow up appointment to do so and think it really helped with the redness and keeping the scars flat.
Hope it works for you too.

Re: Scar massage
I was told to massage my scars twice daily with bio oil or an alternative scar treatment from 6 weeks onwards. When I went back at 12 weeks to see my surgeon he thought the scars were still quite red so advised me to try a different cream from boots. I am not sure it is helping though as they are still very red. Am just hoping with time they will fade. So I guess I'm not sure really if massage helps or not?! xxxx

You'll be fine sue, I was dreading it too bu it was fine, just a bit creepy!
Mine look quite good but are a bit bumpy on the outsides so hoping the massage will help, will watch the link again to clarify what she says. Probably do once a day until 6 weeks then twice then?? No idea hate not knowing whats going on!!!!

Re: Scar massage
6 weeks? Ooops, I have been massaging mine since last weekend (2 weeks) as I wan't told not to, wasn't told to either but have been using bio-oil on my boobs as had the beginnings of stretch marks and just did my scars while I was there. They aren't itching or sore so I assume it is ok
With regard to massaging - just gently rub in circular motions - think it is more to do with getting the blood flowing as I know from having piercings that the ones in area with high blood flow (tongue, down there etc) heal alot quicker than others.

bio-oil recommends when looking for improvement on scars/wrinkles/whatever you are using it for you should use for 3 months

Re: Scar massage
Step, you should ask you PS about using silicone strips, I swear these help, they were initially used for burn scars. There is a load of info on google about using them.
Try not to worry to much as they are bound to initially feel strange at first, but will get better. X

Re: Scar massage
Mine felt gritty at first but I think that was the remnants of the dissolvable stitches and the spray on plaster the nurse put on when the dressings came off.
I quite like how they feel now as I can feel them improving :-)
