Scared of Needles !!!

Hi All,

I'm booked in with Dr Khan through Transform on 19/05/09 and I can't wait.

However, I have one issue - the anesthetic being administered!

I'm not worried about the op or the actual anesthetic itself, it's them putting the needle in! :pale:

I had a really bad experience when I was younger and I had a needle in the back of my hand. It was really painful and my veins kept collapsing so they had to keep doing it over and over and I was so upset! They gave up in the end and stuck it in the crook of my arm and then left the needle there for hours, which was just as bad!

Now, just thinking about them putting it in my hand is making me really panicky and feel sick!

I'd be grateful if anyone has any experiences to share. Especially with Transform/Dr Khan and his anesthetist (I've heard they work with the same ones all the time??)

I know it's silly but it's really worrying me...! :oops:

Expain to them when you go in... they may give you some pre-op meds to calm you down a bit first. I must admit I didn't feel the needle at all when I had my GA (and they put it in my arm not my hand)... so I just looked the other way and within about 10 seconds I was asleep!

This was a big worry of mine as i hate needles so much, i think you need to explain what happened to you in the past and they will be sympathetic with you, they can also give you a cream that will numb the area.

I can honestly say though i didnt even feel mine and i worked myself up so much sat there crying like a baby i felt so silly afterwards and when you wake up your to out of it to care its even there hun.

Aw!! It's not silly!!! We all have things that upset us!! As Angel said explain to them how you feel, you are not alone feeling this. They will be very understanding. Plus they can give you some 'magic cream' which numbs the area ... they use it on children and any other phobics too... makes there job easier as well :)

i also hate needles even thou ive got loads of tattoos and peircings, i think its worse if its anything medical thou!! i was scared stiff of having the needle in my arm when i had my ba, but honestly it was nothing!! it just feels like a scratch, cos i was lying on the theartre bed i didnt even see it, dont worry hun ulle be fine xx

I laughed at Cakey Baby's reply - I think I'll be bawling my eyes out too! Will try to think of the end result and take deep breaths!

I've got my pre op tomorrow so will tell the nurse what a wimp I am...!

im also terrified of needles they were very gentle with me and i was fine just let them know i hate going dentist cause of it and always tell my dentist and he is really gentle with me

I laughed myself afterwards hun couldnt even feel it either that was the worst thing x

Yep, I'm just the same! All the girls have given good advice - main thing is that we let the nurses / anesthetist know - and try and be brave!

Hi all,

I had my pre op today and now it finally feels real. I'm so excited. 20 days to go!

The nurse wasn't very sympathetic about my phobia! He brushed it off! Will have to beg the anesthetist to be gentle with me on the day.

I know exactly what ur going through, id luckily managed to avoid having my blood taken for about 10 year! Im a really queasy gal and even talking about veins can make me hit the deck!
Pre-op was probs the worst experience, so glad its over! - Put it this way, im 22 and had my mam holding my hand throughout and demanding that they both talk to me constantly about anything! Eyes squeezed shut, I felt like i was gonna have a panic attack, cold sweats, shaking, the lot! The nurse kept saying think of ur new boobs... well its **naughty word** hard to when u know theyre sucking blood out of ur arm! The funniest thing was, it wasnt the needle that i was scared of, it was the numbness in my arm that freaked me out lol. So after seeing what a wimp i am (and probably wondering what on earth has made me want to go under the knife!) they've offered me some gas before they actually stick the needle in my hand thank god! Maybe u could ask for this, i kno ill be needing plenty of it! :)

Exactly the same as I was. Wasn't bothered about the op, just the needle!
But to be honest, I got a little teary and the nurse asked why and when i was in the middle of telling her i didn't like needles he'd already put it in, i didn't feel it whatsoever. I had bad experiences with blood tests which is what made me scared, but now I wonder what all the fuss was about, it was nothing honestly. xx

your be fine hun i had same size as you and the pain wasnt to bad including the needle i didnt feel a thing bet u cant wait now

I was not looking forward to the GA one bit, was so stressed out about it but like others have said, they were so busy talking to me when I was on the table that I didn't actually feel it go in, was just like a tiny scratch....try not to worry tooo much & just think of the you'll have when you wake up. wishing you lots of luck xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I didnt like the needle it **naughty word** hurt, much more than blood tests. I dont think my anesthesist was particulary gentle lol so i would ask yours to be.. it was quick tho x

They will take notice of you!!! Nurse probably not having a good day when you went. Just remember you are not alone with this fear, it will be done soo quick and next thing you know you have xx

Thanks everyone - only 4 days to go now! When I think about the needle now, the excitement of finally having big boobs takes over the fear!
