GA worries n Looking after kids post OP??
Hiya,
I am planning on hopefully having my BA in April n im so excited but at the same time im starting to worry bout stuff like not waking up from the GA..i know this is v v rare but i still cant help but worry bout leaving my little boy without a mum...
..n also bout not been able to look after him properly after the surgery coz ive heard you arent meant to do any lifting for 6 weeks?! Is this true? He will only be 16months after my BA so i cant see how i will be able to not lift him..ive got help for the 1st 2 weeks but after that i will be on my own.
Any advice would be great thanks

Hi susan, if it's any consolation, i felt the same about the GA until i looked into all the risks on a website - can't remember which one but probably an NHS website since i believed the information! If you are healthy and dont smoke etc. then you should be fine - think of all the GAs carried out everyday all over the world. If the hospital are concerned about you having a GA they will do some tests before your BA date.
I also have two little kids and think i was so worried about the GA because its not for "necessary" or life saving surgery.
Might be wrong, but i have also heard that lifting small children should be OK after 2 weeks, as long as you don't lift your arms above your boobies - this is what I'm hoping anyway as my 2 year old still likes to lifted up all the time!xx

Hey honey i'd check with your PS about lifting, i have two kids and was told no lifting for at least 6 weeks. It's not so long though babes and you can still sit down and give your little one cuddles and so on xxxxx

at 16 months i assume he can crawl up the sofa etc so you would only need to assist him instead of full on picking up

I had the exact same worries Susan, about not waking up, but GA is so safe you're probably more likely to get struck by lightning or something like that. It's normal being nervous but there's really no need to be.
As for lifting I think it depends if you're having under the muscle or over, I had overs and only had to wait 2 weeks to lift my 20 month old, I could have done it sooner but waited just in case. I was lifting my 3 month old the next day though.

I specifically asked how long I will need help with my kids. I told him that my hubby is off work for 2 weeks when I have my op, and he said that will be fine, to start easing myself back into things from 10 days post-op, and I will be back to normal after 4 weeks.
Re: GA worries n Looking after kids post OP??
I was petrified about the G.A. but have since read that the chances of dying from it are 1 in 200,000. So a 0.0005 percent chance of not waking up. Seeing it like that has really helped me! xxx

I felt exactly the same, I even thought about making a video to my kids - still haven't ruled it out!
I'm having my BA on Friday, I have a 5yr old and 20 month old, so I can let you know how it goes and what I can do when - pm me if you'd like to and if I forget! I've been told not to drive for 3 weeks, but have that covered with lifts etc. After that, I'm just hoping I can get my youngest into his car seat as he can be a bit awkward sometimes.

Hi,
I have 2 kids, 18months and 3years. I think your PS is spot on, you will be fine after 2 weeks. I was able to lift my little girl after the first week, not comfortable but not too bad. By the end of 2 weeks you'll be feeling a lot stronger. I really dont think you have anything to worry about.

Hi hun, I totally relate to what you said. I have a 2 year old and a 7 month old and the thought of it makes me feel utterly sick. I know the chances are totally minimal but I don't think I'll stop worrying about it until I actually wake up!!!
I also have concerns about looking after them after the BA as my S-I-L recently had it done and her hubby had to take over care of her 22 month old for the first couple of weeks.
Listening to the girls on here though, I know I'll be fine and the few weeks post BA where it'll be a bit of a struggle will whizz by, and then it will all be worth it!
Do you have your date yet hun?

Re: GA worries n Looking after kids post OP??
I had unders and started back childminding at 2 weeks post op - I took it steady, didn't go out with buggy or drive car for few days and was careful lifting in and out of travel cots and pushchairs. As long as you can have help for the first two weeks you should be fine.
Start encouraging your little one to be more independent now - climbing up onto sofa to have a cuddle, or climbing up onto a stool so you can lift in to and out of cot, having races to see who can get up stairs first and climb into car seats - your chest muscles will thank you! xx

Re: GA worries n Looking after kids post OP??
I am pre op but have exactly the same worries as you!
My daughter is three and although she is not a baby anymore she still likes to be picked up and carried etc. My friend has two kids and said that she was back to picking her son up after the end of week one (but everyone is different)
As for the GA - my god i am worrying so much about it! It's odd because I have had GA a few times before and the thought of not waking up has never crossed my mind but I think the reason I keep thinking about it this time is more due to the fact that this isn't really a "necessary" operation and there is a part of me which feels quite guilty about what I am doing so I am letting myself beat myself up about little things and worrying a lot.
Try not to worry, I know it's not easy but we will be fine!
Good luck for April xx
