Smoking????
Hi girls,
I was told by my surgeon to give up smoking at least 2 weeks before my operation, he said that this helps the heeling and scaring, i totally understand this as more oxygen will be getting to the wound (also know that whatever op you have hospital will tell you to quit), but he also said it cuts the chance of infection by up to 70% which i totally don't understand!!!!
Every person i know that that has had BA and smokes didn't give up and didn't have any probs!!!!
Any smokers on here? And what did you do?
Thanks girls.

Re: Smoking????
Hi hun, the chances of infection are still very low (on average less than 1% in the UK), but you can make this chance even lower by cutting out smoking. Personally I woul follow your surgeon's advice and try to give up. x

Re: Smoking????
I am trying so hard, but i'm useless!!!! I've been smoking over 10 years and have tried so many times!!! I just put on weight and this is a major worry before my surgery as well, if i put on a stone then have my surgery then lose it after will it effect how they look? Plus my surgeon is going to go with what he thinks on the day to match all the pics i've shown him regarding size, but if i was smaller he would pick a different size!!!

Re: Smoking????
With all the possible complications that could be caused by smoking it is best to quit. I would also strongly reccomend it, plus £6 (nearly) for a pack of 20 is so expensive, imagine all the pretty bras you could buy.
Now what I did was cut down to 4 a day. I then didn't smoke for 24hours before surgery, but I did smoke about 5 hours after my op. I must add I've been lucky I didn't have any problems. But I increase my likelyhood of developing CC
I'm currently trying to quit with an electronic cigarette, fingers crossed.

Re: Smoking????
CC capsula contracture is where the scar tissue around your implant becomes hard, it can cause a deformity and pain in the breast and you would need your implants and the capsule removed. Your implants are then replaced.
Re: Smoking????
Ah yes i know about this but didn't know smoking was linked, my surgeoon told me it was to do with the implants and my body not smoking xxx

If you really don't want to give up and you think it would be too hard then why don't you try and do what misf1 said and cut down. I'm sure cutting back is better than nothing? x

Re: Smoking????
CC can happen with in the first few months and is twice as likely to happen if you smoke, but you can also get an infection, skin necrosis (skin around your scar dying due to poorly oxygenated blood) which would mean your scar wont close, but this is more common during a lift as well as augmentation. Bad scaring. Slow healing.
Re: Smoking????
Just be careful using gum and patches hun. I know you are going to hate me for saying this but when you asked this question I did some googling and all sources of advice say that it is the nicotine that does the harm and that nicotine supplements are NOT adviced before surgery.
Sorry hun, by the looks of things if you want to make a difference it might have to be cold turkey

Re: Smoking????
Read this hun, taken from a quit smoking website:
If you’re a smoker, the best thing you can do for your body prepare for
surgery is to quit altogether, or at least reduce dramatically the
number of cigarettes you smoke each day. Recent research suggests that
smokers stop smoking at least six to eight weeks prior to surgery.
Unfortunately, many of the smoking cessation products that would
normally be available to smokers are not recommended for those heading
into surgery. Nicotine gum and nicotine patches are not advised for
surgery patients. The nicotine in the gum acts similarly as cigarette
nicotine, interfering with the healing process in much the same manner.
Nicotine patches are also dangerous because the flow of nicotine can
interfere with the flow of blood.

Re: Smoking????
Hi girls. I didnt give up smoking for my first ba and had no complications with healing etc. i have however given up now. I went to the smoking clinic and was prescribed tablets called champix. I was abit cautious after reading things on the net but decided to give it a go. It totaly worked for me-the urge to smoke just went and when I did have one it made me feel so sick. Two of my friends have used it with success too. It might not be for everyone but you could look into it with your gp. x

Re: Smoking????
do you think you could try and go on the patches for a few weeks, even if you intend to start back smoking later, just to give you a better chance to heal?

I agree, and i think the reason is that it turns into such a habit as part of your everyday life as well as the chemical addiction. I quit 2 years ago because I met my OH who hates smoking and has never touched one in his life. I was ready to quit and my life routine changed which helped a lot (i.e. I was going to his house every night rather than sitting at home with a glass of wine and an ashtray). I don't think I could have dne it if i wasn't ready.
I still crave it when I have a drink now though - I don't think that feeling ever goes away unfortunately.

But it's not NEARLY as bad as it is when you're a real smoker. It's not like when you get off a plane or something and you just HAVE TO HAVE A CIGGIE OR YOUR HEAD WILL EXPLODE.
It's really more just like you can never have one again. Take it from me, you CAN never have one again... I quit for 8 years, had one in a moment of stress at work coz my boss was smoking, and I'm now back on bloody 20 a day. What an idiot!
Allen Carr's book really helped me the first time. I'm going to try hypnotherapy this time. GRRRR.
