Alcohol before surgery? Can I?
Surgery day tomorrow, admission at 10 so probs be going down to theatre 12ish. Just started to feel flicks of nervousness, like pangs in my stomach every hour, half hour, now about every 20mins.
There's a bottle of wine in the kitchen. Could I have just 1 glass to relax myself a little? Ease the nerves? I know they say don't drink alcohol 24hours before surgery but I'm not talking about getting plasterd, just a glass?
Has anyone else felt this way the night before? Has anyone given in to a small one before bed?
Please don't go mad with me for asking this, I'm wrestling with myself with it, HELP!!
XXXXX

Re: Alcohol before surgery? Can I?
i wouldnt tbh. It can make you bleed more after surgery, which could mean you get haematoma or other complications.
Have a nice cup of chamomile tea or something else relaxing

Re: Alcohol before surgery? Can I?
I had a glass of wine the night before and didn't die on the operating table!....But then I generally flout the rules a bit anyway (ie took my ibuprofen on an empty stomach!)...I'm SUCH a hell-raising rule-breaker! lol
I was also told by my PS that it was fine to have alcohol after my BA also (just so long as I wasn't going out to get plastered!)...This was a relief as it was only 2 days before Xmas!
I can't tell you medically whether having a drink tonight or not is actually a good idea - probably best to not, but unikely to do any real harm if you do! (don't quote me on that!)

Re: Alcohol before surgery? Can I?
Good luck for tomorrow ToriLoula you will be fine. Just busy yourself with something, wether its cleaning the fridge out, the oven or having a wardrobe tidy. It will take your mind off it.
I wouldnt personally have anything to drink, you never know.
Good luck and let us all know how you get on x

Re: Alcohol before surgery? Can I?
I definitely agree with Abbie hunnie, simply not worth taking the risk. I know the evening before is particularly traumatic with nerves and excitement tying your tummy in knots. Camomile tea is relaxing - as is a nice soak in the bath with some essential oils to help you relax.
Stay strong lovely, the finishing line is in sight now

Re: Alcohol before surgery? Can I?
Awww hun, sorry to hear about the nerves kicking in, although I expect I'll be the same when my time comes!!
I agree with Abbie, its best not to have alcohol as it can make you bleed more (this is why tattoo/piercing artist wont tattoo or pierce you if you have had alcohol within the last 24 hours).
Have a hot chocolate or horlicks or something and get an early night. I dont know about anyone else but GA always makes me really tired so no doubt you will need the rest pre-surgery
Once again, good luck tomorrow xx

Re: Alcohol before surgery? Can I?
As abs said hunni, alcohol thins the blood therefore increasing risk of bleeding, also alchol can mess with your anaethestetic, makin it more potent, but its your call.
Good luck for tmro xx

Re: Alcohol before surgery? Can I?
If you do have a relaxing bath try not to have oils that are too scented as I was told not to use toiletries that were strongly perfumed before op (can't remember why), also they advise no alcohol as it will make you more dehydrated. I would just have a nice cup of hot chocolate and eat as much chocolate as you can (while you can), what time can you eat up til). Good luck for tomorrow, will be thinking of you xxx

Okay....it looks like I'm in a bad girl gang of one, and probably should be put on the naughty step! lol
The other girls are (of course) absolutely right - tea is probably best tonight (save the champagne for after! )
good luck for tomorrow hunnie - you'll be fine!

Re: Alcohol before surgery? Can I?
Glad we managed to put those doubts in your head hunnie, you knew deep down that it was the wrong thing to do.
Come to think about it, that was one of the questions that both the nurse, anaesthetist and my surgeon asked me on the day of the operation "Have you had anything alcoholic to drink in the past 24 hours??" So keep on hitting that little devil who is sat on your shoulder with a fly swatter if he starts suggesting it again LOL
