Saline vrs Silicone
So girlies.....I am due to get my new boobies April 26th, my question is what is the difference bewtween saline and silicone? I am having Mentor Implants and on their website they have stated that the FDA will not allow persons under 22 years old to have silicone so sounds like I'll be having Saline implants. Whats the difference?? I've read that silicone is softer but thought you lovely ladies could probably get me all sorts of info instead of reading all sorts of contradicting stuff on google (as wonderful as google is) Any opinion will be great!!

Re: Saline vrs Silicone
Ahhh where's fawn when you need her?! LOL
Fawn, a member here did extensive research on the two before having her BA and from what I remember, I may be be wrong, she made the decision to wait until she was old enough to have silicone as this was her preference. She's since had her surgery and from her posts seemed very happy.
From what I know there is less risk of rippling from having silicone and they have a much more natural feel to them then Saline.
Both implants are safe and both implant have the same risks when implanted, it's just all about personal choice and what you feel is right for you hun. xx

Re: Saline vrs Silicone
Cookie you absolutely do remember right about Fawn waiting until she was old enough.
ThresaMaree, the FDA is the US Food and Drug Administration. I believe that it is only In America where the age limit applies therefore if you are not in the US this rule doesn't apply to you. Of course Mentor state about the FDA requirements, this is because Mentor is a US brand and the most commonly used implant in the US.

I hope this helps!

Sorry to but in, but I thought saline wasn't used in the UK for implants anymore? Or am I wrong?

Re: Saline vrs Silicone
Are you in the US hun? If you are in the US then yes you would need to wait to get silicone. If you are in the UK, it is highly unlikely you will find a surgeon who implants saline implants. I have not known of one since looking into BAs.
Most of us on here are in the UK and therefore have silicone implants, but there are some overseas members and one or two may have saline.

Hi hun, I see you are from New Zealand, I had a quick look here
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
and it doesn't say anything about being over 22 to have silicone, if that's what you wanted.

Re: Saline vrs Silicone
I think the over 22 rule for silicone only applies to women in the USA. I think some women still choose saline because of the bad press silicone got in the early 90s when it was liquid silicone, if the implant ruptured and the silicone migrated into the body it could get quite nasty. So women had saline because it is a sterile substance and if it leaks into the body there are no problems medically. Now the generation of silicone implants used today is very cohesive - they implants are sometimes called 'gummy bear' implants as a reference to their composition inside, eg, even if you cut them in half, the gel stays put. There are still risks to having silicone implants if they rupture as their have been instances with the gel migrating in some way or another, but in my opinion the benefit of having the most natural look and feel outweighs the risk. This would probably be a good question for James our resident surgeon.

Re: Saline vrs Silicone
if a silicone ruptures it keeps its shape whereas saline is absorbed by the body which causes no harm, more natural feel with silicone apparently but ive never felt saline so might not be much difference, goood luck choosing xxx

It's also easier to detect a rupture with saline as the implant deflates whereas a silicone implant may stay undetectable for years. xx
Re: Saline vrs Silicone

Nope, not always, ruptures can often go undetected with silicone, they're what's called 'silent ruptures' Some people get symptoms from a rupture and some don't. xx
