Unders - cutting the muscle?
Can anyone explain how exactly a surgeon places an implant under the muscle? Is the muscle fully attached and has to be cut fully in half to place the implant or do they just slice a pocket and keep the muscle intact? Is a lot of muscle wasted all together by having unders?

It might help to have a look at a picture of human anatomy to get how this works.
The breast pocket for where the implant will sit is made underneath the pectoralis major
take a look at this link here

Thanks, that is a helpful site, the diagrams make it clearer to understand. I don't think I like the idea of having my muscle cut though!

Re: Unders - cutting the muscle?
I don't think the muscle is cut hun, you still get the normal use of of it.
think about it this way... The muscle is attached to your sternum (breast bone) and goes diagonially across to your shoulder bone. In women the muscle is slightly smaller than the picture in the link.
Th muscle is not attached to anything in the center and the breast tissue sits on top of the muscle. So the muscle is simply lifted and the implant placed in the space.
The reason it feels like you've been for a long work out when you wake up is beacuse the muscle needs to stretch to accomodate the implant that isn't normally there.
Have your surgeon explain too, he'll probably be able to explain better and can tell you the effects on the muscle.

Re: Unders - cutting the muscle?
I had submuscular, they dont cut the muscle. They lift the muscle and place the implant underneath. The bottom part of the implant isnt covered by the muscle, only the top half. Hope that helps :)

Re: Unders - cutting the muscle?
If the bottom part of the implant isn't covered by the muscle, then that is partial under, not full under.

heres another link [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
unless you're getting the armpit incision, they'd be cutting the muscle to give you full unders. with partial, it sits below the pecs but above the fascia. full unders its below both. they generally suture the cut muscle or just let it heal on its own. muscles are pretty hardy too though. eat a lot of protein to help it along!

Re: Unders - cutting the muscle?
They do have to disect parts of the muscle to form a pocket for the implant.
