overnight stays?
Hello
Just wondering for those that stayed overnight what it was like? did you want to be there or would you have rather gone home? also do you get your own room and are you able to sleep?! Ive small children that still wake me at night so thinking i may actaully get a better nights sleep in the hospital?! xx

Re: overnight stays?
i think everyone has to have an overnight stay. for me i definitely wanted to stay until the morning. i was still drowsy from the op so i slept on and off straight through. to go home on the day would be too i early i think, you need help moving around and for most of the evening i was on as morphine drip, although the pain wasnt that bad, which you couldnt have at home. also the nurses need to monitor your blood pressure etc. i would be very suprised if anyone went home on the day. i had a private room with private bathroom with BUPA. i think most people would although i cant say for definite xxxx

Re: overnight stays?
I stayed overnight both times and wouldn't have had it any other way. First time round I was first on the list in the morning and was so spaced out for the whole day that I wouldn't have wanted to go home. Second time I didn't go down till about 3/4pm and was in recovery for about an hour and a half as I needed more morphine. The hospital I stayed at was lovely and the food was great so it was a no brainer as far as I was concerned. I wouldn't have had anyone to look after me when I got home as well so really I couldn't have been a day case.
I guess its personal preference - a lot of the girls on here who were day cases had absolutely no problem and would have preferred to be at home. If you have kids tho I'd say stay in for the rest!!

Re: overnight stays?
Hi
I'm pre-op but totally identify with you. I have 2 small children and for that reason I would have opted to stay overnight if I could. I chose to have a day case purely because I couldn't afford an extra £800 to stay overnight.
However, I've chosen to stay in a Premier Inn for the night (which is only £70) so that I won't have the kids disturbing me in the night and jumping all over me in the morning! I'm also staying fairly near to the hospital (I live 60 miles away) which is reassuring should i have any problems post op.
If you can afford to stay overnight, I'd say go for that option. In addition to knowing that you are in safe hands still, you'll have an adjustable bed which will make that first night easier and with having your own room it won't be like the horrible experience of being on a hospital ward.
It depends who you go with too, I would have stayed overnight if I'd gone with Mybreast as it is only an extra £400.
At the end of the day it depends how you feel about staying in a hospital overnight but I know where I'd rather be after surgery!
xx

Re: overnight stays?
I stayed over night as I lived to far from the highgate to be a daycase. To be honest even if I had lived closer I wouldnt have wanted to go home the same day as I was so tirered afterwards and kept falling in and out of sleep. Also I didnt know how I would react to a GA as I had never had one before. You get your own room and the nurses check up on you every so often. xx

Re: overnight stays?
I live less than 15 minutes drive from the hospital but my OH and mum insisted I have an overnight stay. I too wanted to stay over so that I could be observed over the night and then checked by my ps in the morning before discharge. Just for my piece of mind really.
tbh I wouldn't have had it any other way, I personally just felt a lot safer staying and I didn't take to the GA very well anyway so there was no way I was leaving the bed the same day! I needed the doctor to give me some anti sickness meds later that evening through the cannula, which stopped the neasea and sickness for a while.
My room was lovely and spacious and they let my OH stay with me all day until the night shift people came on, at about 9.30 pm and then he was back at 7am the next morning.
Ooooo and I loved the reclining bed, it really helped me get used to the sleeping propped up the first night, I actually wanted to take it home with me! x x

Re: overnight stays?
I stayed overnight and am gald that I did, I had a really good experience - it all wnet very smoothly and pain free.
I was back from surgery aroun 12.30 and spent most of the rest of the time in hospital sleeping, only being woken up to eat or to have blood pressure checked etc...
It was nice to be able to just rest and relax afterwards without the upset of having to travel home etc...
I also wanted to stay in overnight just incase there were any problems then I knew I was in the best place xx

Re: overnight stays?
I had an uplift, so I had to stay in overnight, but to be honest I was so glad I did. I didn't feel at all well after my op, I can't even remember much of the evening after I was so out of it and I felt really sick all night. I definitely needed the re-assurance of having the nurses around.

Re: overnight stays?
I stayed overnight in the same hospital as JNo101 and weirdly enough I loved it!
Had a lovely room with private bathroom. I don't think I would have been able to go home the same day at all. Was so drowsy and in quite a bit of pain. I didn't feel good at all when I was there, couldn't eat, felt sick and just wanted to sleep.
My OH came in with me at 7am and left about 9pm, love him!
Overnight stay is worth it in my opinion x

Sorry JNo101 lovely, but this is incorrect.
Many, many girls go in as a daycase, myself included.
An overnight stay is recommended if you have complications or are very sick after the GA, if you live too far away (more than an hours journey) or have no one to help you the day after. Of course you can state you want an overnight stay if you want one, but most girls have no complications and are fine to go home on the day.
I know I was grateful to be in my own bed, eating my own food and being able to be waited on by my hubby!
