Mammogram before surgery?
Hi fellow booby friends!
I have a question - I might be being paranoid but I can't help feeling I should have a mammogram before surgery? I'm 37 and although not in the danger zone 2 of my friends have recently had breast cancer and subsequently mastectomies- one aged 35, 1 aged 37.
I rang up the spire to see if I could book one in and they said it was £175, so I thought all good and was ready to book in... Until she told me they won't do them on women under 40 without referral from a doc. I just don't understand if I'm paying for something why I can't have it!!
Are there any girls my kind of age which had one before surgery? Or do u think I'm being ridiculously paranoid and I should forget it!
I asked my surgeon at my last consult if I should have one and he said there was no need!
On the plus side I got my pre op date - 8th Dec and my admission time for surgery day 12pm though today - eeeeeek!! Xx

Re: Mammogram before surgery?
My surgeon said he would have arranged one for me if I had of been 40, but because I wasnt, I didn't need to worry. I think if you are concerned, then see your gp, I'm sure they would refer for a private appt. but otherwise I wouldn't worry, unless of course you have symptoms. I'm sure your surgeon has already done a good check for lumps xx

I thought the same, I'm 43 but I didn't go through with one in the end. I was wondering if the PS would see anything different once operated on ( weird question I know!! ) but did wonder. I'm sure if you booked a doctors app your gp would gladly refer you for one. Then at least you will have peace at mind. You still have a little while before surgery so I'm sure you could get one done before hand. Xx

I might call the doc tomorrow then - might see if I can get a telephone appointment to save taking appointments from others that need them. Thanks girls xx

Re: Mammogram before surgery?
A few years back I found a lump(was 32 at the time) so went to GP. He referred me for an immediate appointment with the breast clinic at local hospital. They refused to do a mammogram on me but did an ultra sound scan instead. Lump was nothing to worry about thankfully but the reason for no mammogram was due to my age. X

Re: Mammogram before surgery?
Unfortunately it's one of those things. My gp refused to get me a smear because I was under 25. But in all honesty, unles you have a reason to get one, i.e there's a lump or a change to cause concern, I wouldn't bother. Plus your surgeon will have a good feel too. I think there was one girl, put asleep, and they were just about to make the incision when the surgeon found something, so the brought her round and spoke to her, instead of pushing ahead with the surgery. It's up to you, but I wouldnt.

If you would feel more at ease to see your GP then make an appointment but like others have said without any symptoms he probably won't refer you. Xx my pre op date is also 8 December xxx

Re: Mammogram before surgery?
I thought u were 8th Dec too Mrs Kelly - we shall compare notes!!
I did read that the reason they don't do mammograms under 40 is that the breast tissue is too dense so they end up getting more false positives. Oh I don't know. Perhaps I'm just being too paranoid! X

Re: Mammogram before surgery?
Had a chat with the GP today - just did a telephone appointment. I think she's reassured me. If I don't have any symptoms then its not worth doing. All that radiation for a spot of paranoia. Also as a thought - younger breast tissue is dense so they often doing get an accurate reading anyway. I will leave it - feel a bit better after speaking to doc though.
