Anyone with a BA and an ongoing medical condition?
I’m wanting a BA but also have an underlying, rare medical condition (MEN1) It’s a genetic disorder that effects the Endocrine system. It causes benign (sometimes malignant) tumours to grow on the Pituitary gland, Parathyroid glands and Pancreas. I’m otherwise healthy and I’m experiencing no problems with my medical condition at the moment. I am on long term medication (calcium and vitamin D).
I know the surgery itself will cause no issues surrounding my medical condition but I think it’s the Aneathestists that tend to be uneasy, especially with a diesease they have never heard of. I have had 4 general anaesthetics so far with no problems what so ever.
Has anyone got an underlying medical condition and had trouble getting a BA?

Re: Anyone with a BA and an ongoing medical condition?
Hi Kitt, I'm a type 1 diabetic so im in the endocrine club with you!!
The surgeon was happy to go ahead with me as long as my blood glucose was under control.
My original surgery date was 19th Jan but my blood glucose was too high that day (I had a low blood reading during the night and it made my blood rebound and go high by the morning). The anesthetist refused to do surgery on that day as risk of infection was too high. So my BA got rescheduled to the following week.
That's my story anyway. It's all down to what the surgeon says hun!!

Hi Raisen, thank you so much for responding :-)
That's good to hear.My condition is stable at the moment (nothing of interest is happening). My last MRI scan and blood tests have come back normal. I do suffer with low blood sugar levels, I constantly have to eat. I had my pancreas checked during my last MRI and that came back completely normal so my Endocrinologist isn't concerned.
Did your Surgeon liaise with your Endocrinologist?

No worries, my pleasure!!
Good to hear your condition is stable hun :) My surgeon was happy to go ahead as long as my condition was stable and I was in good health appart from being diabetic! As with many chronic/long term conditions, there's always a heightened risk of a complications whether it be with the surgery itself or afterwards (infections etc). As long as your stable and they have no issues with it, you should be fine!
I would recommend going with a private clinic who have Baaps registered surgeons hun, you want the best in terms of being looked after with a condition, during surgery and afterwards!
I looked a lot online about girls with type 1 diabetes who were considering/had a BA, that really helped me. But, if your condition isn't a common one then you might not get many results with that!
The surgeon didn't liase with my diabetic team directly, he wrote to my GP I instead hun.
Please feel free to ask whatever questions/concerns you may have my love, I'm happy to help out!

Oh and it's better to have a low blood sugar than high ones hun, the surgeon won't like it if you're having a lot of highs!
The day of my surgery, my blood sugar was 3.6mmoll- so quite low. And the anesthetist was happy for me to go into surgery like that. I was hooked up to a sliding scale and he said he'll just pump some glucose into me if it fell any lower during the surgery.

Our admin Cookie here has underlying issues, and has just had another op herself. As Raisen said, definitely stick with BAAPS if you can as they are top of their game, and fully disclose on everything. What may happen is they book you in, but then aren't happy with your bloods in the run up, so delay the surgery. But I don't see any reason that you couldn't have it at all.
