pre op blood tests
Forgive me as am a bit snotty as writing this lol!
I was told that I need to have a blood test before surgery, and asked if I could have this yesterday on the same day as my pre op with my surgeon, I rang the hospital with the go ahead of the clinic and was told no, blood tests MUST be 7-14 days before. I left it at that and then saw my surgeon yesterday and explained that as I work 60miles from the clinic it would be very inconvenient to have bloods done during the week and that because I'm keeping it quiet at work I would have to use my last day holiday having these done. A member of clinic staff told me it was no problem to have my tests on the same day as my surgery and just turn up earlier - my surgeon agreed! It seemed as though having them done on the same day was fairly common place. I was pleased to hear this as had, in honesty, been stressing about using a days holiday and then having no holiday to attend my 4 week post op appt. I received an email today advising that I cannot have my bloods on the same day and that the hospital would call me in "a few weeks to try and arrange a convenient time" am a bit peeved now - I've basically said I can get to the clinic from 7.30pm or otherwise weekends.
I'm really stressed about this now and it's really annoying me! I should not be getting stressed about a blood test!!

Re: pre op blood tests
Are you sure it's not just a clerk following 'normal' procedure without realising the discussions that had gone on before? I would call and clarify/argue. Tell them it's not possible. I actually didn't have a hospital pre-op. Spire wanted me too but i saw my surgeon at a different clinic a few weeks before in the evening to confirm sizing and because I had a good medical record, bp etc he told the hospital where I was having the op that I didn't need a pre-op assessment as it's over an hour from my house. They just did an mrsa swab when I arrived. I would clarify if and why it is really necessary. That's assuming you have a clean medical record! Don't stress though, worse comes to to worst you could go 'sick' from work x

Re: pre op blood tests
I've personally never heard of anyone having bloods done on the day and I've here 5 years Kez. Reading your post I was actually thinking "there's no way they'll do that and if it were me I'd be calling the actual hospital'
The reason why I wouldn't imagine they'd do it on the day is because if there is a problem with your bloods which sometimes does happen - it's happened to me, you'll simply be sent home and they've then got to try and fill that bed then as opposed to you having them done the 7-10 days pre-op and if problems arise they have time to fill your bed and waste no money.
I totally understand that it's upsetting for you to have to possibly take that last holiday babe, but if this is what it takes to get those new boobs...well, I'd do whatever Kez.
If it is such a big inconvenience for you though...you could always postpone for a date that suits you. A pre-op lasts 6 months, so you'll have lots of time on your hands to get a date makes you happy, stress free and happier.
Or if your going to go with this one, hopefully they do late bloods, but if not - you're just gonna have go with it Kez, there's no other choice. Xx

Re: pre op blood tests
Can you just ask them to post you the bloods sheet and you get it done locally and sent to them? My local hospital does a walk in pathology clinic daily, so I just go down super early (to avoid all the sick people!)

Re: pre op blood tests
If there is no other option I will have to attend - no way am I changing my dates as will have waited four months anyway.
If a pre op lasts 6 months I should have been allowed my tests yesterday - I rang up a month ago and asked.
I'm 24 with a clean bill of health, low bp etc. i think what's annoyed me is my surgeon has said it's ok, another lady has said it's common place and now I'm being told they will call me in a few weeks, firstly they haven't got a few weeks and secondly I'd like them to be a bit more proactive if anything is I at least know what I'm doing.
I'm probably making more of an issue of this than I need to, and am mad at myself for winding myself up - but working 9-7 (sometimes later) I need to be organised and would like too feel some effort is being made to accommodate me. I had minor surgery at a private hospital before and if ever I rang my consultant he would return my call within half an hour, personally each time. I just think a nurse taking bloods should be flexible - ATM this is like booking a doctors appt with the nhs.
Sorry am ranting - like to be organised and am finding things to worry about!

Re: pre op blood tests
Was told I can't have my bloods elsewhere - there is a spire hospital much nearer to me and I could easily ask my go for a routine blood test.

Re: pre op blood tests
Why do you need blood tests? I didn't have any blood tests. My pre-op consisted of taking height, weight, blood pressure, mrsa swabs and measuring me for DVT stockings and a urine sample.

Re: pre op blood tests
I asked my surgeon and was told it's routine - that's what happened only the other other occasion I've had surgery Rhy.
If I need them I will find a way to make it, am just a bit peeved that my surgeon has given the go ahead and others aren't allowing it, surely he's the one in the know!

Re: pre op blood tests
If you have any pre-existing health problems Rhy, or the surgeon feels there may be reason for bloods (in Kez's case it seems it may be the low blood pressure) those women have to have bloods taken. They aren't standard Rhy and are generally done on a need only basis.
When I had my surgery it was 6 months ahead, but this was with 'Transform' Kez. Spire may well have a different criteria to be met. Hopefully you'll get it all sorted sweetie. Xx

Re: pre op blood tests
Oops sorry I have normal bp - typo, I have that checked every three months with my depo.
It's not and shouldn't be a big deal - I would just like to know what I'm doing so I can at least make arrangements - I'm a plan everything months in advance kind gal! In my old job if I'd have said I needed the morning off to have a hospital appt nobody would blink an eyelid, it's not as easy going where I am and can't even use half a day for bloods and half for 4 weeks post op cause can't take half days.
I just need some boobies!!

Re: pre op blood tests
I have had a reply from the clinic to say that it's the hospitals protocol and that can't be helped. Only other option if hospitals don't do weekends is asking my GP for bloods, has anyone else done this and are they usually agreeable despite it being cosmetic?

Re: pre op blood tests
Yes, I have Kez.
As long as both GP and Surgeon are agreeable there's no problem at all.
I was having trouble with my bloods. My potassium levels were too high or something. I'd already had two at the clinic and the surgeon said that if my go was ok with it then they can monitor my results till I get a good one.
So do ask Kez. Xx

Re: pre op blood tests
That's great, thanks Cookie, if hospital don't do weekends I may do that :)
Did discuss it with my dad who is the voice of reason and wondering if I should just suck it up and do as I'm told - tell work I have a hospital appt. if they weren't so strict this would be a non issue!

Re: pre op blood tests
Don't worry, some clinics don't do pre-ops at all and others will only ever do them if there's a health condition of some sort just to check you're fit and well. Xxsamlr87 wrote:Im concerned now, I'm not having any kind of pre op, at all?! Next time I see my surgeon will be on ba day!

Re: pre op blood tests
Sam, I didn't have a 'pre-op' until the day. They'd rang me a week before for my BP and next of kin, but it wasn't until the day that I went through a medical questionnaire etc. No bloods, just pee! Don't worry about it, every clinic is different.
