Aching down 1 side of torso
I'm 2.5 weeks post op and things have been going really well with no pain and usual discomfort as expected. But last night I woke up at 3am with pain and aching down my left side from my waist up over my chest/boob to my left shoulder. It aches so much it hurts to take a deep breath. I took some paracetamol in the night but pain/ache was such that I struggled to fall back to sleep. Do you think this is just a sign I've been over doing it and need to rest? Or could it be something more sinister? Thanks ladies x

Hey mammamia,
I don't know if it's the same thing, but I'm now 6 weeks post op, and I've had a lot of pain in my left shoulder. I think it was muscular, from sleeping funny, and when I say muscular pain, it literally hurt to breathe sometimes with like a muscle spasm. The pain has now gone. I didn't panic about it as I had a similar situation pre boobs from carrying a suitcase, and so figured it wasn't directly boob related. I naturally have always been a tummy sleeper, so don't think i can get used to not doing so. The bad news is I've had the nagging shoulder problem for a few weeks before it settled down.
Hope you feel better soon, if in doubt, i'd ring your clinic

Re: Aching down 1 side of torso
Sorry to hear about this hun. Do you remember doing anything extra yesterday which may have over exerted yourself or pulled a muscle? Or did you sleep in an awkward position. I found that I could still quite easily over do things in the first few weeks without realising by trying to do more than my body was capable of. Ease up and rest for a few days and take some painkillers to see if that helps. But if it continues then I would check with your surgeon or clinic. Sorry can't be more help and hope someone can give you better answer. Take care x

I wonder if it's because your carrying yourself slightly different without realising or maybe u need a sofa day! Taking it easy is harder than I thought. If I was you, I'd call the clinic anyway, it's not worth worrying yourself when you can put your mind at ease xx

Re: Aching down 1 side of torso
Thanks ladies, i think I've got to the bottom of it! I started driving again last week and Thursday and Friday had to do long journeys as my commute is 1.25hrs so I think I've been resisting any movement my body would naturally make whilst driving and tensing up. Feel likes I've got the worst muscular ache ever in my ribs so perhaps I've strained them a little. I spoke to the clinic and they said it sounds probable but not a lot I can do except painkillers and rest so that's what I'm doing for the rest of the weekend! It's actually worse then immediately after surgery! I've managed to get some more sleep this morning as before I was exhausted from being awake since 3am and I think that was amplifying it too and making me emotional! Fingers crossed it will pass! xx

Re: Aching down 1 side of torso
Its absolutely over doing it. You've got to that point where you think you're ok because you can get back into a normal routine, but actually you still have to be so careful with heavy lifting, movement etc. I definitely think its a mix of driving, sleeping funny, holding your body in a protective stance (which you'll be doing without realising). Also, don't forget that a) you're body needs to get used to the extra weight, and b) swelling will move down the body, so it could just be coming out on your ribs and torso, which is normal post op.
I don't think its anything to be too worried about, take it easy, have some painkillers and a cup of tea, and insist someone make a fuss over you!

Thanks Charli. I've cancelled all plans and having a very lazy weekend! It definitely takes you by surprise when you're lulled into a false sense of security and feeling fine! A healthy reminder though!

Re: Aching down 1 side of torso
Hope your having a really restful weekend. I found that driving made me feel uncomfortable for about 6 weeks and I journeys as short as possible. In fact I still find it hard to change up in to fifth gear & in to reverse sometimes now as I really tense the muscle. It's our body's way of telling us to slow down x
