Long journey home
Hi, I'm booked in for ba at Dolan park on the 21st. It's 3 1/2 hrs drive and I'm starting to feel nervous about going through it all on my own, so far from home. Never had a ga before so worried how I'll feel after. Also worried about journey home. Haven't received my time yet but wondered how soon before surgery u generally arrive and go home. Also do I wear my macom on the way home or will I just be taped up? Will speak to care coordinater before I go but would like to hear from personal experiences. Think that's all! Lol
Thanks everyone. This site has been a god send! X

Re: Long journey home
Are you overnight or day case? I was an overnight in Dolan, it's lovely there. GA is scary, especially for the first time. You will feel weird when you come around. I arrived there at 8am, didn't go to theatre til 3.30, was starving. They wake you up really early around 5am so they can give you breakfast and discharge you ready for the next lot of patients. I felt it was too early.. some girls will magically wake up with their sports bra on, other will be taped up, it depends x

Re: Long journey home
Hi, babe! It's totally normal that you're anxious about your BA. A 3 1/2 hour journey is very long! How are you getting there and back and why are you going alone if you don't mind me asking? Is there no one that can go with you? It may help as it is a very emotional time and you may need quite a bit of support! Your surgeon or the nurses will advise you on whether you need to wear your macom.
I wish you the very best of luck!! Have a magical day, honey! Your excitement will outweigh your fears i'm sure!!
Take care, honey!
Congratulations in advance xxxxxx

Re: Long journey home
I assume you have someone to take you home lovely?
I found the car seat blooming comfy after OP but you will worry of each bump in the rd. Perhaps stop for a stretch of legs/cuppa half way.
I stayed in over night. I went home after lunch and having drains out.
To be honest I loved it in the BMI, I would of stayed for sinner too if they'd let me!

Re: Long journey home
Hey Gail, try not to worry too much about the distance. I think it's where we live.. I'm in the Borders and go to Carlisle shopping A LOT! :) there was no where really close or good near by. I ended up going the Glasgow way which is about 3hrs drive from me.
I have no idea about what you will come out wearing or not wearing, as mine is next week :D
I'm overnight, and my mum will be coming with me to drive me home and staying over night in a local hotel I found :)
will you have someone picking you up? or will you be travelling home yourself?
I've had a General before, when I had back surgery.. I was spaced out for the whole day of my surgery but after that you're pretty much fine, just dry mouth and groggy.
xx

Re: Long journey home
I'm 50 miles south of Edinburgh Tink :) born and raised in the burgh though :) Basically slap bang in the middle of Carlisle and Edinburgh if you drew a straight line through. So it's roughly 1hr-1.5hrs drive to edin depending on the traffic then edin to Glasgow. I'm about 50 miles from Newcastle too, I went there to see MYA like AGGGES ago, and wasn't impressed which is why I tried Glasgow :) driven there 4 times now and i'll be there again on Wed for pre-op assess and then again on Sat for my surgery :D

Re: Long journey home
Hiya, thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm using the hospitals transport. My boyfriend was gonna come but he's gotta watch the kids. The only other person who could have either came with me or watched the kids is my mum but she's recovering from a broken pelvis. I'm staying overnight. I think I scared myself watching u tube diaries but I've been told I have a high pain threshold and as I have m.e and rheumatoid arthritus I'm used to being ill, so telling myself to quit whining cos I will cope ok! Lol.

Re: Long journey home
hi gail,
i was with THG at Dolan Park too and I used the hospital's transport both on the way there and home.
Drivers were both really kind and friendly (they pick up nervous girls every day of the week lol).
My trip was about 2 hours long. I had my sis travelling with me, and on the way back I made the driver stop at a service station so I could go to the loos, I just walked really slowly and I was fine.
The cars they use are really comfy as well and they dono't drive like lunatics if you know what I mean. ;)
Maybe take a pillow with you though, it will be a godsend on the way home to put between your boobs and the seatbelt.
are you a daycase or staying overnight? I think Dolan Park usually do overnight cases? I was discharged at 6.30am after breakfast and was told driver would get me at 7am. He poked his head around the door at 6.45am already so felt a teeny bit rushed but just said I'd be ready in a few mins and didnt rush. We were ready to leave at 7 which I understand because they admit the new patients from 7/8am and need the beds back.
It's fine leaving then really, because by the time you're back you'll be glad you're home and can relax in your own bed.
You'll be fine :)

Re: Long journey home
God, that's early to be kicked out, what if your surgery is late afternoon? If new patient arrive around 8, that means I'll be picked up about 5am?!!!!! Good job I can easily sleep in cars. Starting to get really nervous, god knows what I'll be like next week! Lol

Re: Long journey home
yes i asked my pcc for an early admission, she said all she can do is put the request forward, but it worked.
i got picked up at 5.30am, but the driver was already there at 5am (my sis saw him through the window lol), but he waited till 5.20 to announce his presence bless him. and then i had an admission of 7am.
for me it was good because i really didnt want to have to spend all day fretting about it.
thats why i was then also understanding of the early discharge.
don't know what its like though if you only have an afternoon surgery but really once you've had a good sleep you should be fine.
i think i was still on a combination of GA and co-codamol that morning, i was awake before my wakeup call/breakfast and pottered about packing my own stuff back up lol.
my sis was surprised when she arrived and i was so active haha x
