Capsular contracture post radiotherapy
Hello Mr Armstrong
I had breast augmentation approx 3 years ago. About a year after my operation I discovered a lump in my left breast which turned out to be invasive ductal carcinoma, which I had removed and subsequently underwent a course of radiotherapy. At the time I was concerned about the possible effects that radiation would have on my implant, but was urged that this was the best way forward.
Within a few months following completion of my course of radiotherapy I started to notice hardening of the left breast, and as time went on this has increased to the point where the implant is now very firm and the left breast has become elevated and is now a lot higher than the right. It gives me some pain and discomfort and is uncomfortable to lie on my side in bed, as the breast does not move or give.
I have been to see the surgeon who carried out my breast augmentation and capsular contracture has been confirmed. It is recommended that the left implant be removed and a capsulectomy performed and a new implant replaced. At the same time it is also suggested that an uplift be carried out on the right breast in order that they become more symmetrical, although I understand that they will never be quite the same as irradiated tissue reacts differently.
I would like a second opinion to ensure that the route I take is the right one, and therefore your opinion would be appreciated. Or if you know of someone I could speak to who specialises in this type of thing, then I would be very grateful.
I did talk to the surgeon who performed my cancer surgery about my options, but he seems to think that all that can be done through the NHS is a removal of the implants. This would obviously leave me with loose skin and saggy breasts, so is not really an option I want to consider. I am having some pain in my rib area and upper back due to the tightness of the tissue in this area, and as previously mentioned sleeping on my side is uncomfortable.
If you would like to see any pictures please PM me and I will forward these to you.
Your advice would be appreciated and many thanks again.
