Scar concerns Empty Scar concerns

Post by jsweetie 23rd August 2013, 6:21 pm

Hi Ladies, I'm 11 weeks post op and have just noticed that although my scars are healing beautifully, when I touch them I can feel small bumps under the skin, almost like tiny peas. They're not painful, they just feel a bit gross. I don't see my surgeon again until the 10th Sept. I know some ladies have been told by their surgeons to massage their scars, but Mrs Kat never told me to, so I thought I'd better not. But now I'm concerned that because I haven't I'm going to be left with lumpy scars. I'm really not sure what to do! shrug

Scar concerns Empty Re: Scar concerns

I had a mole biopsy on my stomach back in March, when I got my stitches out unfortunately the wound burst open (worst experience) and left my with quite a raised scar! My doctor prescribed me with Dermatix silicone gel, seems to be really helping! I've also bought 'Scar Away' silicone patches that work amazing too (they are used by hospitals for burns victims etc) They both don't work instantly but in the long run they are both proven to really help! I'm going to use both on my surgery scars once they've healed xxx

Thats really interesting Zoelucy, I've never heard of that before. Is it prescription only or can you get it over the counter?

Its really not necessary to spending large amounts of money on scar treatments unless you have good cause to, such as a risk of bad scarring, keloid scarring etc. other than that, simple massage over the scar is all that's needed to break the scar tissue down. You may find some bio-oil which you can buy for a few pound or even just moisturiser if you'd prefer to to just make the massage easier.

I would say though that its ALWAYS best to follow the advise of your surgeon. If you'd like to massage then a call to your clinic take moments babe just to confirm its OK.

I didnt touch my first scars whatsoever with anything. Nor did i massage at all and they healed beautifully to a scar that was barely noticeable. Xxx

As cookie says, simple bio oil and small circular motions over your scar will soon break up the scar tissue (the hard lumps you can feel) xx

Just to show how unnecessary scar treatments are if you're healing well you can see my scars [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] from my first BA at 2 1/2 years post-op. x

Thanks ladies, as I say my scars actually look great. It's just when I touch them I can feel the lumps. Like you've suggested Cookie, I think I'll contact my surgeon and see what she advises. I'm sure a little bio oil will help xx
