Day Case - Drains
Day case ladies
Did you have drains fitted after surgery? I thought it was pretty standard procedure to have drains in for the 1st 24 hours but wondered how this works in a day case situation?
Thanks xx

Not everyone will have drains. If you're in for a daycase having drains, if there's not a lot of blood loss after the day you're in hospital then upon discharge, the drains will be removed and you'll be sent home. If you do have a lot of blood loss and its felt necessary then you'll be required to stay overnight. This will be free of charge.
Dont worry lovely. the surgeons know what they're doing and will look after you. Xx

Re: Day Case - Drains
Pincessjo my surgeon said to me today that the drains collect fluid but ur body does have to learn to dispell it through ur body so that is what the swelling is up to a week after surgery.
I have currently got my drains in! No pain with them and I've been offered gas and air when they take them out! She said the whole is so small it heals itself as well.
Princessjo, are u feeling ok? Nearly there xxxx

Re: Day Case - Drains
I am a little scared about drain removal now as they are starting to sting a little. Once they are off I'll feel so much more mobile!!!
Sorry I reminded u about them!!! Am sure they got it all sorted for day cases.
Wednesday will be here before u know it. U will do great xxxx

Re: Day Case - Drains
I just followed the nurses instructions KJ whilst she took out me drains. I looked away and took deep slow breaths in and out, before I knew it they out and I never felt a thing! Its just a strange sensation but no pain at all. Xx
Re: Day Case - Drains
Thanks cookie, u are brave!!! They gave me gas and air, which was welcomed as loved it with my 2nd birth so got all giddy and she pulled them out! I hadn't realised they were in so far. It was just uncomfortable but not sure what would have been like without the gas!!! Deep breaths is a good idea! It's over before u know it too! Xxxx

Yeah don't look! I hadn't really realised they were wrapped around the boob! I've got couple of dressings where the drains were but can take off after 2 days xxx

Oohh I hope I get gas and air lol
Do they offer you anything when they put the cannula in? This this the part I'm dreading the most, I remember from having my sections how much they hurt

Re: Day Case - Drains
I never had any drains put in. Could this be the reason for my lefty being so painful? More fluid in there perhaps that has not been dissolved into my body as yet! X

Re: Day Case - Drains
Nahhh... It'll just be down to that breast suffering a little more trauma in surgery than other one.
I had no drains with one surgery and drains with another. I actually had a better recovery without lol.
Surgeons have very differing opinions on whether or not drains are necessary at all for primary surgery. Some surgeons think they do help... Others think they don't.
Your body naturally absorbs any fluid that's there Jo so don't worry, it'll settle down soon enough. Xx

Re: Day Case - Drains
I ended up with drains for a while due to a little complication but i never felt a thing when they took them out...was waiting for some sort of horrid pain or something but no totally nothing at all.
