Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
Hi ladies,
I am a bit confused about how I go about getting proof of my surgery before it happens? Just to let me employer know that it's real, as they will definitely question it. Also, can I get a sick note from a GP before surgery? Or will this be after?
I am DREADING telling my employer

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
Thank you g0902! Can I get this before the surgery date? Do I need to make an appt with my GP and ask him to write it for me? Or just ring them?

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
I think they do! Yes :) usually you ring to let them know you need a docs note because you might need a slightly longer appt than normal, then they book you in for your appointment. Id bring any type of confirmation of your surgery with you (just in case!) but my clinic actually contacted my doctors to tell them xx

That is great thank you! Will they then discuss how long I will need to be off work for as well? I will make an appointment next week I think.

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
Not a problem hun! :) Ummm im not 100% sure, but I assume the doctors will know that the recommended time for recovery is usually at least 2 weeks depending on your job.. They may give you 1 week to start then ask you to come back after surgery if you need longer.
I just booked holidays with work to save any queries lol my work are all a pile of nosey parkers!! xx

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
Wow that's really bad for your sister hun! Thanks for your help!
One of my workplaces knows all about the surgery and know I will be taking time off, but the other don't. They also don't pay holiday pay so I need SSP for the time I am off from them

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
I know, i thought it was pretty inconsiderate for a doctor! She went private with her surgery and is now one very happy lady :)
Ah that sounds like a nightmare :( and very strange that they don't offer any holiday pay at all! I would go with the general surgery note hun that way you don't have to explain yourself to them at all if thats what you would prefer. I had complete unders and after week one i really started to feel back to normal! xxx

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
Its crazy that some girls get transferred with no hassle at all while others struggle to even get their doctor to support them let alone the various other appointments required!!! xx

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
Hey princess- I'm not too sure how you get a sick note beforehand but I'm sure you will be able to sort this. With regards to not wanting your workplace to know what it's for - they will probably put surgery or hospitalisation (this is what mine said).

Thank you Hangle, I will give them a call and make an appointment next week. Do they hand-write it or is it typed?

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
Mine was hand written but it came from the hospital- they sent it in the post and dated it day after my op. I wasn't expecting it but I needed the extra week off so it came in handy! X

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
I'm unsure if you'll get a note signing you off 'before' surgery too.
You're generally requested to self certify for the first week and then if you need more time off or you need to be signed off heavy duties your GP will then based on what kind of surgery you had and what exemptions they feel you need will they write the note for you lovely.
I personally wouldn't be bothered if your employer believed you or not. If you booked the time off its your own business what you do in that time babe and if you need to be off for longer then you can get the not from your GP explaining and in turn confirming your reason for being off work. Xx

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
Thanks Cookie, the problem is that I haven't booked the time off! As we don't get holiday pay I will be better off being "off sick". I don;t have time to book the time off now either so don't really know how else to approach it other than tell them about my surgery and that I won't be in work for a couple of weeks (or more since it's a physical job) .

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
do u have to tell ur work that u r doing a surgery????? i am not too sure about UK coz i am from Australia. In Australia employers are NOT ALLOWED to ask employee what r they actually get it done. this is against the law.
i only told work i am going through a procedure n i will be providing doctor certificate n they are cool with it. so i will be off as sick leave
since we are all commonwealth i am think UK should be the same on this. good luck!!!

Re: Sick Notes And Proof Of Surgery
A GP doesn't have to write the exact procedure here in the UK. They can just write that their patient has had 'general surgery' which could be anything really. Xx
