How common is it to be sick after surgery? I've got a big fear of it so just wondering what the chances are!

I remember feeling sick and them giving me a cardboard bowl incase but I wasn't sick. Not sure if they gave my any anti-sickness meds, I was retry out of it and by the time I came around properly I felt fine.

I have felt sick before in hospital and been given anti-sickness meds... So I presume they will supply them if you need them. X

I wasn't sick after mine. I'd read about being sick so asked for a sicky bowl afterwards as I was always sick during labour (no idea why I thought that might b related...???) but I didn't even feel sick.

I was also fine after my op. When I first stood up to go to the loo I felt really faint and a little bit sick, but after a sit down and some water I was completely fine.
As the other ladies have said, if you let your surgeon/nurses know that it's a worry for you then they can give you meds for it Feeling or being sick after surgery? 1978086825

I have to be honest sweetie, I was sick. even after anti-sickness medication.

If this is something you're very worried about Christa, talk to the nurses when you get to the hospital. I promise you they will do all they can to prevent this happening and there's no saying it will as you can see from the majority of posters on this thread. But because there's a small chance, just talk to them and if you were to be sick, they'll get to you right away and top up the meds to help you hun. But do be sure to mention this upon admission. xx

I had a laporoscopy (bad spelling!) 16 months ago and when I came around in the ward and sat up I went really dizzy and faint and was sick but when I had my BA I woke up in my room and didn't feel sick or anything at all, in fact I was very happy when they told me I needed to eat some toast before I had any more pain meds!
I don't remember anything about coming round in recovery though so can't say how I initially felt but then what I don't know won't hurt me!

Hope all goes well for you xxx

Aww thanks everyone. I'll definitely be asking for meds just incase. Did you get them through iv or a tablet? Is it the anaesthetic that will make you sick or the pain/pain meds? Sorry, I have no idea what happens, I'm so new to it all xx

It's the anesthetic Christa. You'll be given anti-sickness meds through IV whilst they have you asleep and again should you need the after waking. I was given them again through IV. xx

Anything at all you feel unsure of sweetness, please don't apologise for asking. Thats what we're here for and we're happy to help Feeling or being sick after surgery? 571992xx

Hey hun, i'm sure you will be absolutely fine. They will give you the appropriate meds but if you are still a little sick it will be short lived. The nurses are so nice they will be there for you so try not to worry and certainly don't be embarassed because they have seen it all before.

I find talking about my worries on here helps me big time so go for it hun, nothing ever sounds silly- we all have individual fears that get the better of us sometimes xx

I was sick after taking the painkiller "tramadol" like really really sick everytime I took it, so I just used paracetamol instead and I was fine. So maybe give that a miss if you are offered it? Or ask if they have anything else? :) xx
