Erm when I had my surgery my hospital wouldn't allow the plastic ones either hun x but check with your surgeon/hospital before your surgery.

Hi, where is the piercing that your worried about?
Ive seen a few girls on here be allowed to wear a plastic replacement, but like Lisa said, it really depends on your surgeon and hospital because although some girls may have been allowed to wear a plastic one etc, your surgeon might say absolutely no!
Let us know what they say... luckily all of mine are years old and will be fine to be taken out :) xx

I had to take all of them out, except my ear piercings they were allowed to be covered with tape. none of them closed up as i was back in my room within 2 hours however if you have a tongue bar that will have to be removed, and can't put a plastic retainer is as it's because of the breathing tube it has to be gone. i'd check with your surgeon, i spent £16 on the plastic bars and wasn't allowed to use them lol x

They wont let you leave your tongue bar in - no chance!! The aneasthetist has to but a tube down your throat to allow you to breathe under a GA so if they catch the bar and it gets lodged in your throat or your lungs it could kill you! They wont take the risk. Some things they will let you wear a PTFE retainer in if its well away from your surgery site but not in your mouth. There are 2 reasons they make you take piercings out.

1, The metal interferes with the diathermy so you cant have any metal in you
2, The jewellry itself could be a danger - which a tongue bar could be as explained above!!

I had to take all my piercings out for both operations. I have over 30 in my ears, my lip, my nose, 2 in my belly button and I have my tongue done. I was in theatre for 5 hours and my tongue bar was out for over 8 hours and it went back in no problem as did my lip piercing. I have had them pierced for over 10 years though!!!

i think it depends on each individual, my tongue bar closed up after a couple of hours and i'd had it done for 4 years. this was a year or so ago nothing to do with BA x

That shouldnt make a difference as its insulated by the uterus... plus copper is an inert metal

My friend had an emergency c-section and was put under but had a plastic bar in her tongue an it was ok for her 2 keep in. So im sure it'll depend on that anaesthetist on the day.

Thats a bit different cos in an emergency they just knock you out.. no time for messing.. If she was given a GA for a section it must have been a serious emergency so they will take bigger risks (I am a midwife by the way!) I wouldnt expect any anaesthetist to take the risk with planned surgery.. its isnt worth then risking their professional registration or your life!!!

Good advise there from 5stonedown :ok:

I wouldn't panic about taking piercings out. You're only away from your bed when having a BA for an hour and a half at most so the opening won't close and if you remove them just before they come for you to go to theatre you can pop them straight back in when you get back and when at the hospital, some (not tongue piercings) may be able to be taped. Hi,

I wore the Bioplast studs in my piercings (ears and nose) but I still had to cover them up and sign a disclaimer. I think it depends on who you go with. :-)
