Why no Chinese food?
Hi Ladies
My friend had her BA in December at the same hospital I'm having mine and she gave me her post op paperwork for me to have a look through to get an idea of recovery and what I can and can't do post op. It says you can't eat Chinese food for 14 days after the op, does anyone know why that is? Xx

Re: Why no Chinese food?
Thanks misf1, do high salt and MSG slow recovery then?

Re: Why no Chinese food?
the vast quantities of monosodium glutamate (MSG) used in Chinese dishes could
possibly affect your heart rate causing blood pressure and
possibly circulatory problems. High garlic quantities can thin the blood.
MSG and salt can also cause stomach upset and water retention.

Re: Why no Chinese food?
To be honest you would probably have to eat a hell of a lot for it to affect you in any way at all, but some surgeons are very careful. It is only a precaution and I would always follow your surgeons advice. Don't let it scare you though.
Re: Why no Chinese food?
I agree with misf1 for the possible reasoning, I would however question that specific advice? If the research and evidence suggested that this an issue for recovery than you would assume that it would be general across the board for any surgery to have a low salt diet 14days after the procedure. I personally believe 'a' meal of Chinese is in not going to hinder recovery unless obliviously you are supposed to be on a low sodium diet and have other medical factors.
I have never heard this and to my knowledge it is not normal practice. Be interesting to hear from any nurses or doctors out there if they have heard about it? xx

Re: Why no Chinese food?
I think it's because there's no hard evidence about it Lisa. But the then again any kind of evidence can be argued in health. I would follow your surgeons advice in order not to void any aftercare however I wouldn't get too stressed over it and start checking ingredient lists ;) x
