STEROIDS BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY
Hi ladies. A quick question. Im due for surgery on the 5th of July and most recently ive had a minor relapse, due to (MS).
As a result of this my neurologist has put me on a course of steroids (Methylpednisolone) 500mg per day for 5 days.
Please can anyone tell me how long before surgery should one stop taking steroids and how long after can one take steroids.
Ive asked my patient care co-ordinator but shes a bit of a fanny and never gets back to me until she remembers or until I give her a detailed job description...this im trying to avoid.
Thank you for any replies in advance.

Hey starjem, if your patient co-ordinator is no help then call and request to speak to the clinic nurse hun, with you finishing the steroids so close to having surgery date, the sooner you have this dealt with the better for yourself.
Steroids are a very strong medication this really is something your surgeon and the anaethetist should be aware of hun. I'm not saying for definate this would happen, but the last thing on earth you'd want would be to make it all the way to hospital and risk being told they'd have to put your surgery back for a while sweetheart. x

I'd had steroid injections in my wrist and when I discussed this with the nurse she asked me not to have any more until after my op so do ensure you discuss it with the clinic nurse if you haven't already just to be on the safe side. x

Hi Alice. How long before your BA did you stop taking steroids and how long after did you start taking it again?

Re: STEROIDS BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY
Mine was injections every so often not a full course, I last had one on March 7th and was booked for my BA on 28th April. I saw the nurse somewhere between those two dates and she told me not to have any more until after.
I would definitely try and get in touch with somebody from the clinic to find out as soon as possible hun x

I did speak to a nurse and she wasnt two sure so im gonna wait until a whilr after surgery before I start the course prescribed.
I dont know why she could not be more clear on the matter but id rather be safe than sorry.

Re: STEROIDS BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY
Starjem, your health is far more important than a BA lovely, if worse does come to worse and you do have to put your surgery back a couple of weeks, its not so bad is it. Steroids arent handed out willy nilly lovely and you could be putting your health at risk by not taking them babe.
If you feel your nurse didn't take you seriously, then call again and make her hun!
If you need the steroids to make you well then take 'em babe, I seriously worry for you should you suffer another relapse after having your BA due to not taking your medication.
Sorry if that sounds harsh babe, but I strongly feel your health really is far more important. xx

How are you feeling now babe? Did you start the steroids? Have you made contact with the clinic about this? xx
Re: STEROIDS BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY
It took 10 days to see my neuroligist from the time the relapse started. He prescrobed steroids and told me he thinks im having a minor relapse.
I cashed my precription four days later and by that time my symptoms started to regress so I didnt take them.
Everytime im prescribed medication, I do not take it because id rather do things natrually. However I was considering taking the steroids this time but now I feel fine. The same as i did before.
Obviously if I still felt peculiar, I would take the steroids. To take them now would be pointless as the relapse or whatever it was has passed.
The steroids itself has unwanted side effecets and to me they make me feel just as bad.
The Hospital Group said 3mths before and 3mths after.

Re: STEROIDS BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY
Totally understand lovely. Having an auto immune disoder I've been on and off steroids for half of my life and I hate them! They do make me feel better.... eventually, but to get there the side effects are pretty dire aren't they, so you do have my sympathy babe. Glad you're feeling better anyway and the op is back on then I guess, so.... wey heyyyy! Not long to go now is there! xx
Re: STEROIDS BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY
Well I had my re-op on the 5th July. At the moment I have no complaints.
A little achey but nothing like the first time. Been able to do everything as normal.
I guess its just a waiting game to see the final results.
In the meantime im going to buy myself some bras as the twins have grown a lil.
