general anesthesia experience ???
hi all... i had a really bad experience with the general anesthesia while doing my appendix.. i am so worried about the general anesthesia more than the surgery... my friend had the surgery and i was with her and she was literally dying from the side effects.. she was vomiting non stop all night.. and couldnt breath well and had a headache.. she thought she wasnt gonna make it.. and its not like its a bad hospital.. its a very good one.. and she had a nose job before and did not have those side effects..
can anyone share the experience please.. im so scared !

Re: general anesthesia experience ???
Hi Doony, my experience was very good. I was just woozy and laughing before I went to sleep, then when I woke up I was just feeling quite high and happy. I was sick once in the evening but I don't know if it was the GA or the Tramadol tablet I took. I heard they make you sick. Sounds awful the experience your friend had! :( xx

Re: general anesthesia experience ???
I'm sorry to hear of your and your friend's troubles, Doony. I hope you have both recovered from the pghysical effects, for alll that the bad memories remain.
Clearly we can only relate our own experiences but for what it's worth here are mine:
No adverse effects. At all. From any of them. And I've had four this year*, most recently on Monday this week, just four days ago, for my BA.
No nausea, no wooziness. I obviously slept it off in the Recovery Ward each time, plus a bit of extrra dozing back on the general ward/ in my room. Depending on how long one is under the anaesthetic, a hospital will administer anti-emetics as appropriate. I was given them for my four-hour op two months ago but had none for my 80-minute BA this week.
I suggest you discuss your previous experience (and your worries) in detail with the surgeon, who has more access to, and influence over, the anaesthetist than you are likely to have. There is nothing to be gained by adding your friend's bad time to your own (she probably had a different hospital/ procedure (obviously)/ anaesthetist/ physiology to you) so just base your calculations on yourself. Personally, after one bad experience, I would be cautious but not panic or be put off completely. Go into it with your eyes open, so to speak!
*By the way, that's four GAs (General Anaesthetics)....not four BAs (Breast Augmentations).

Re: general anesthesia experience ???
Talk to ur anaesthetist about ur concerns and ur bad experience. I had had a bad experience in the past with a GA but told my anaethetist that following another subsequent operation had no sickness after being given anti-sickness meds before coming round and he was lovely and told me he would give me THREE different anti sickness to pretty much rule it out (altho he did still say he couldnt 100% guarantee it) I didnt get any problems whatsoever xx

Re: general anesthesia experience ???
Just had this experience yesterday with the sickness and nausea after anaesthetics. I had been perfectly fine on a previous operation a few years ago so didnt expect it. I was given one anti-sickness jag after being sick the first time. I couldnt shake the nausea and kept panting to stop the sickness. I was then sick a further 2 times but didnt like to make a fuss, the nurse came in to check and noticed I had vomited again so gave me a different jag the second time. I never felt any more nausea after that. What a relief.
It would be a good idea due to your previous experience to have it administered as soon as possible. The nurse said there are a few types.

Re: general anesthesia experience ???
hi dooney, i had a very positive experience with the general anaesthaesia, loved going under!! Felt so relaxing like drifting off to sleep. When i woke up, i acted drunk for half an hour, thought the male nurse was my husband and tried to kiss him!! (read my story!!) after that i just felt tired and extremely happy with my new boobs. Don't fret, everyone gets nervous, but i'm sure ur going to be fine hun xxx

Re: general anesthesia experience ???
Im afraid its hit and miss with the reactions you have to the G.A...............I too had a bad reaction to the G.A when I had my appendix out at the age of 13, It took ages to Knock me out and I woke up with the tube down my throat.... I was very sick and took 3 days of being out of it before I came around properly.
I then went onto have 2 G.A in which I was out like a light and I woke up straight after no problems and as they were aware of my sickness to it I was given strong anti-sickness injections used to treat sickness in people who are having canser treatment.
With my B.A again I reacted badly to the G.A....was I could remember being Knocked out and that it took forever and was 1st into theatre at 8am, my hubby was told id be gone a hour and I didnt come back for over 2 and a half hours! I dont remember waking up till around 5pm in the afternoon and was tired and kept sleering my speech. I was told that it took way more G.A to Knock me out then it should do for someone my size so it took alot longer then normal for me to come around!
For this reason I was offered to stay overnight if I didnt feel upto going home but I left 2 hours later.
They took into account my sickness problem and again i was given a strong anti-sickness drug as soon as I felt sick and that stopped it.
After a good nights sleep I felt normal the next day.
I also got the G.P to prescribe some strong anti-sickness drugs as the painkiller also make me sick!
At the end of the day everyone reacts different to the g.a.....I was told by the nurse once I woke up at pm that she had never seen someone react to the G.A the way I did, she said I was very agressive and my hubby couldnt stop laughing at me I have no memory of anything but she wasnt impressed with me!
I was also referred to a G.A specialist after my reaction I had with my appendix and they told me that you react different everytime so no one can say if it will happen again in the future thats just how it is and chances are id never have a reaction like it again but sickness is very commen
I have since gone onto have another G.A ( i have had alot! lol) in which I was really worried about having due to the G.A reactions with my appendix and B.A and put the op off for over a year till it had to be done as a emergancy and again went to sleep fine and woke up like nothin had happened........
I understand why your worried hun but try not to be as im sure youll be fine xx

Re: general anesthesia experience ???
I had GA once for a rather unsuccessful c-section revision :/. I found the GA much easier to deal with than the local ones I had for my two c-sections.
I threw up with the first local, only felt nauseous with the second because I had requested anti sickness meds, but I was left itchy for days with a bad headache, these are usual side effects with the spinals.
With the general I told them my concerns and reactions to local, they gave me anti sickness meds. I remember being awake one moment, then awake the next but couldn't remember where I was or why I was there for few minutes. Other than that, I felt a little drunk too, and rather chilled out, so my overall experience was rather pleasant, nothing like the local.
Everone reacts differently, I would voice my concerns again including before surgery to make sure they give you something to prevent sickness if it really bothers you. You should wake up nice and chilled and enjoy doing nothing for a while :)
