my PS hasnt talked to me about drains and i was wondering if they were necessary and every girl needs them? also how long do you have to wear them? and more importantly what are they?

Re: drains!
It ususally is the ps's preference if they use them or not. My ps uses them with large implants 500+ and with lifts... I was both so I had them. If you get them the time you have them varies, they ususally leave them in until you are only draining a small amount of discharge which is hours for some and a couple days for others. I had mine in for 2 days. Basically they are thin rubber drains in the pocket of the breast that lead out to little rubber bulbs and they just drain the excess fluid from the surgury, and they are used to prevent swelling and brusing from the build up of that fluid. In my case they worked wonders, I had basically no swelling and no bruising. If you have to have them dont let them stress you at all, they do not hurt, you dont feel them, they are no problem, and come out quick and easy at your ps's office.

Re: drains!
My ps uses them with all her patients. Its jst a tube that they put into the breast to drain out all of the excess blood or fluid to reduce the swelling. They are a pain when u need a wee but they dnt hurt at all and it didn't hurt when they took them out either. My guess is though that if ur ps hasn't mentioned them to u, they probably dnt use them x

Re: drains!
But when they pull the drains out, wouldn't you require stitches again? There must be a hole somewhere?!

Re: drains!
Sarahdawn has given you a great explanation hun, so nothing more to add other than I had them and I found them fine. I wouldn't let the thought of having them worry you at all.
xaxa ... The hole from the drains is so tiny it doesn't require any stitches hun.

Re: drains!
I had drains after each op and Alfie is right it's such a tiny skinny tube it just has a plaster on it...I've had bigger wounds from carpet burns
Seriously though don't worry about drains, they are nothing to worry about and it's a little weird as they remove them but no pain at all from them!

Re: drains!
I've had two BA surgeries - One with drains and one without.
Some surgeons use drains for all their patients, others only tend to use them if they think there may be complications post-op when having a 're-op' otherwise they aren't necessary at all.
From my own findings I found absolutely no change in my recovery when using drains or not Boobs were still very swollen and squelchy regardless.
So, drains or not hun, don't worry, they don't hurt, they're just an inconvenience when you need to carry them the loo LOL. Other than that there's nothing to it. xx

Re: drains!
Thank you girls... very good explanations as always. My only curiosity was about the stitches but as you said, they are so thin that no stitches are required. Nice!
