cleaning scar area? Empty cleaning scar area?

Post by tulip 6th April 2011, 9:04 pm

Hi everyone,
I'm now 13 days post op (ticker is still wrong! anyone know how to change it, or delete it?)

Anyway, I got my dressings off and now i just have steri strips over my incisions/scars. I replace these strips when they start to come off, which is every 2days or so.

I haven't really cleaned my scars yet, as such. Just been sort of scared to go near them!
Does anyone know how I should clean them..? Just with water maybe..?or maybe just as regular in the shower now..? I've been keeping them covered while showering so far.

Also, I was told by me surgeon that I can start using dermatix on my scars if I want, but I never asked about cleaning the area.

Plz let me know what did, or have been advised to do.

Thanks ladies!

I had steri strips too for first two weeks, after that could shower and was told not to worry if they came off, but didn't do anything at all to clean them, they just had a rinse when I was in the shower and that was it.

I know all surgeons seem to have their own ways and preferences but this is what mind advised.

Hope that helps a bit!

I was the same as lizziem. I had them taped for 2 weeks, during which i did shower and I showered after they were taken off as well.

However, I did not have to retape them.

I had steri-strips for three weeks, when the dr removed them. I was told from day one that I could shower normally, let the water run over them but not direct it at them. I have not actively rubbed any kind of soap, lotion or ointment on them at all, at 4 weeks now. I think as long as they are rinsed and other than that kept dry, that's all they need.
Follow your surgeon's advice always. Any post-op papers the clinic or even surgey center sent home should have a not about incisions. Clean and dry is a simple, good rule of thumb.

Hey hun, if your suurgeon has said you can now use Dematix on your scars, they must be fully healed sweetie.

Shower as you normally would, if your scars are very tender just let the water run over them, if you find they're OK, you can gently wash them.

I used a cool air from my hairdryer and gently let the air blow on my scars after showering to ensure they were really dry, this does help with the healing and is quite soothing too. xx
